Those who visit Beco do Batman are sometimes surprised to see news of flooding in the region. The explanation for this is hidden just below the colorful streets of the neighborhood.

Underneath the Beco runs an old São Paulo river called Rio Verde, now channelized and practically invisible to anyone walking through Vila Madalena.

The river hidden under the Alley

Long before there was graffiti on the walls or tourists taking photos, that area was part of the natural bed of the Córrego Verde, a watercourse that crossed the neighborhood and headed towards the Pinheiros River.

With the urban growth of São Paulo, especially from the 1940s and 1950s onwards, many of the city's rivers were channeled and covered to make way for streets and buildings. Rio Verde was one of them.

Today it continues to run underneath Beco do Batman and streets like Medeiros de Albuquerque, but inside underground pipes.

When it rains a lot, the water returns to its natural path

The problem appears mainly during periods of heavy rain.

As the river was channelized and the streets in the region are relatively narrow, rainwater reaches the point where the old course of the river passes very quickly. In some cases, the volume of water ends up exceeding the capacity of the pipe.

When this happens, the water tends to follow the path it historically took along the river, which explains why some areas of the Beco can flood in more intense storms.

Researchers point out that the channelization of streams transforms natural rivers into true “hydraulic cannons”, increasing the speed of the water during heavy rains.

Projects to reduce flooding

Over the years, some urban solutions have been discussed to reduce the impact of rain in the region. Among the proposals are water retention reservoirs, known as piscinões, which could reduce the speed of the current before reaching the Beco do Batman area.

Some of these ideas would involve interventions in public spaces in the neighborhood, such as nearby squares. However, some of these projects ended up being blocked or debated with residents' associations, who expressed concern about urban changes, use of green areas and possible impacts of large-scale works.

These discussions are common in large cities, where urban infrastructure needs to be balanced with the quality of life in the neighborhoods.

When flooding usually happens

It is important to say that flooding is not constant.

They tend to occur mainly at the beginning of the year, a period in which São Paulo records the highest volume of summer rains.

Outside of this time, Beco do Batman operates normally and receives thousands of visitors every week.

Furthermore, today there is more information available for residents and visitors to plan better.

With Civil Defense alerts sent to cell phones, weather apps and more accurate weather forecasts, it is easier to monitor days of intense rain and plan your trip.

How to plan for rainy days

On days when heavy rain is expected, some simple actions will help to avoid any inconvenience.

If you are driving, the ideal is to park on higher streets in the neighborhood, avoiding naturally lower spots where water can accumulate.

Another recommendation is to stay in safe and structured establishments, especially if a sudden heavy rain starts.

A safe place to wait out the rain

Between graffiti, conversations and good food, the Beco experience continues inside.

The city built on rivers

The case of Beco do Batman is not unique. Much of São Paulo was built on canalized rivers and streams, something common in many metropolises around the world.

The difference is that, in Vila Madalena, this story ended up creating a curious contrast: where a river once flowed, today art flows.

And even when the rain reminds the city of its natural origins, Beco remains one of the most creative and visited places in São Paulo.
