United States GP 2026: qualifying and grid penalties

Antonelli took pole in Austin; Lindblad and Colapinto will lose places, while Bortoleto also faces a penalty.

Kimi Antonelli claimed pole position for the 2026 United States Grand Prix, ahead of Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar. The qualifying order, however, does not fully represent the final starting grid: Arvid Lindblad will lose five places, Franco Colapinto will lose ten, and Gabriel Bortoleto is also expected to start further back after changing multiple power-unit components. Because the consulted source does not provide a consolidated final grid, the reliable reference before the start is the qualifying result together with those penalties.

The race is scheduled for Sunday, October 25, at 3pm local time in Austin — 8pm UTC — and remains subject to change. It will run for 56 laps or a maximum of 120 minutes, according to the official Formula 1 timetable. Check the official page for any updates.

Antonelli starts from the benchmark position

Antonelli set a 1m34.035s lap on his first Q3 attempt. It remained the fastest time even after the Italian abandoned his second flying lap. It was his seventh pole of the season and came on a weekend when he has a mathematical chance of securing the championship.

Verstappen finished 0.179s behind, while Hadjar was only 0.036s slower than his Red Bull team mate. Verstappen and Hadjar therefore secured second and third for the team. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton put the two Ferraris fourth and fifth, followed by George Russell.

The qualifying order published by Formula 1 was:

1. Kimi Antonelli

2. Max Verstappen

3. Isack Hadjar

4. Charles Leclerc

5. Lewis Hamilton

6. George Russell

7. Oscar Piastri

8. Lando Norris

9. Arvid Lindblad

10. Liam Lawson

11. Pierre Gasly

12. Nico Hulkenberg

13. Gabriel Bortoleto

14. Franco Colapinto

15. Fernando Alonso

16. Ollie Bearman

17. Esteban Ocon

18. Lance Stroll

19. Carlos Sainz

20. Alex Albon

21. Sergio Perez

22. Valtteri Bottas

Which penalties change that order

Lindblad received a five-place drop for exceeding the permitted allocation of internal combustion engines. Colapinto will lose ten positions after taking a new control electronics unit. The official report also says Bortoleto will start at the back following changes to multiple power-unit components, but the available passage does not give a numerical penalty.

Perez and Bottas, originally 21st and 22nd, should gain one place each once the Colapinto and Bortoleto penalties are applied. Alonso and Bearman also move forward relative to Colapinto’s original 14th place. Without a consolidated official table in the sources, those movements should not be converted into a definitive final order.

The climb to Turn 1

Only 230 metres separate pole position from the braking point for the opening corner. Turn 1 is an uphill braking zone with several possible lines, a combination that creates a wide fight for space at the start. After qualifying, Antonelli acknowledged that leading into the corner would be an initial objective, while also noting the speed of Verstappen and Hadjar.

For viewers, the key is not only the reaction when the lights go out but also the positioning of the first three drivers on the climb. One may choose a shorter inside route while another tries to carry speed around the outside. The source describes the circuit’s possibilities but does not support predicting which option each driver will take.

Track limits could decide positions

Track limits have already had a tangible effect. Every driver had at least one lap deleted across practice, according to the qualifying report. In Q3, Norris lost a time for that reason and dropped behind Piastri into eighth. Bearman also had a lap deleted in Q2.

Turn 19 is one of the places highlighted in the official technical guide to the circuit. During the race, attention should focus on repeated excursions and any stewards’ decisions, without assuming a penalty before one is announced.

Tyre wear creates the strategic question

Pirelli selected the C2 as the hard, C3 as the medium and C4 as the soft. The opening sector places particular stress on the front tyres; in the third, acceleration out of slow corners tends to generate thermal degradation at the rear. The asphalt is not described as especially abrasive, but the age of much of the surface contributes to high wear.

The hard compound could support long stints and make a one-stop strategy likely. That is not a confirmed plan: high temperatures could increase degradation and make alternatives viable. The Friday team reports reinforced that uncertainty, with Racing Bulls finding more degradation than expected and Red Bull identifying tyre management over long runs as a central challenge.

The sporting picture before the start

Antonelli arrives as the championship leader and can secure his first title in Austin if he wins, Russell finishes ninth or lower, and Hamilton places no higher than fifth. Verstappen, meanwhile, won the previous two rounds and four of the last five Formula 1 races staged at the Circuit of The Americas.

Pole gives Antonelli the best starting position, but it does not remove three sources of pressure: both Red Bulls directly behind him, the short run to Turn 1 and the need to preserve tyres at a circuit that works both axles. Those are more useful criteria for following the race than treating qualifying alone as a prediction of the result.
