Centre Pompidou closed: where to find its art in Paris

The Beaubourg building is under renovation, while the collection and program continue at partner venues.

Centre Pompidou’s historic Beaubourg building is closed to the public for a major renovation. Visitors therefore cannot see the Musée National d’Art Moderne there or treat the Piazza as an entrance to the galleries. The institution remains active, however: works, exhibitions, cinema, and other activities are appearing at partner venues. To plan a visit without arriving at a closed building, start with the official Centre Pompidou program, which identifies the venue for each activity.

What is closed in Beaubourg

The building ended regular public access on September 22, 2025, and held one final celebration inside in October of that year. According to the official transformation page, work began in early 2026, with reopening planned for 2030.

The project includes removing asbestos from the façade, treating structural corrosion, renovation, energy optimization, and accessibility improvements. It also calls for reorganizing the collection display, the Bibliothèque publique d’information (Bpi), and areas devoted to creative work.

This means that a photograph of the Piazza or façade does not demonstrate current museum access. Visitors to the neighborhood will still find Ircam at its historic Place Stravinsky location, since it is the only component the institution says will remain on site during this phase. That does not mean the main building is open.

Where the Pompidou program continues

The decentralized program is called Constellation. Rather than moving the entire museum to one temporary address, Centre Pompidou is distributing projects among partners in France and abroad. In Paris, the official schedule on October 27, 2026, included activities at the Grand Palais, Panthéon, Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris, and Bibliothèque nationale de France — Site Richelieu, among other venues.

The practical rule is to check each event page, not just the Centre Pompidou name. Venue, dates, hours, booking, and admission conditions belong to the host institution and may change. The official map and schedule bring the various locations together and help distinguish programs in Paris from projects in other cities or countries.

The Bpi has also left Beaubourg and now operates in the Lumière building in the 12th arrondissement. The Centre’s cinema activities and those of the Cinémathèque du documentaire have moved to mk2 bibliothèque x Centre Pompidou, by the BNF–François Mitterrand entrance. Confirm the specific screening and its rules before traveling.

How to explore the collection without the main museum

The closure has not made the collection invisible. The official collection page provides routes into masterpieces, departments, the history of the MNAM/CCI, loans, videos, podcasts, and the magazine’s collection section. It is a useful place to research artists or works before choosing an off-site exhibition.

One distinction matters: finding a work in the digital collection does not mean it is on display in Paris. The announced policy is to expand loans and touring exhibitions, but each show selects only part of the holdings. To see works in person, check the project description and location in the schedule; for research, use the digital resources and loan map.

A new hub, Centre Pompidou Francilien – fabrique de l’art, is scheduled to open in Massy in spring 2027. It will combine storage, conservation, research, exhibitions, mediation, and creation. On October 27, 2026, it should therefore not be treated as an already open replacement for a regular visit.

Two art alternatives in Paris

Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris is the most direct alternative for retaining a focus on modern and contemporary art. It belongs to the municipal Paris Musées network, which comprises 14 museums and heritage sites and maintains its own calendar. The network lists its address as 11 avenue du Président Wilson, 75116 Paris. On the publication date, the calendar also included the 2026 Marcel Duchamp Prize, held there in partnership with the Pompidou program through February 7, 2027. Confirm conditions and availability before visiting.

For contemporary art from a private collection, another option is the Bourse de Commerce — Pinault Collection, at 2 rue de Viarmes, 75001 Paris. On October 27, 2026, its official program featured photography and contemporary-art exhibitions including “Remember Me,” Barbara Kruger’s “The History of Tears,” and “The World According to Penn.” Check dates, tickets, and hours on the official website because they may change.

These two institutions are editorial alternatives, not equivalent branches of Centre Pompidou. Their collections, curatorial approaches, access policies, and programs are their own.

How to build a reliable itinerary

First decide whether the priority is following the Pompidou collection or simply visiting modern and contemporary art. In the first case, filter the official schedule for Paris and open the selected event page. Note the host institution and confirm the address, date, time, and any booking requirement there.

In the second case, consult the Paris Musées and Bourse de Commerce calendars. Do not plan the day solely from maps, old photographs, or search results that still present Beaubourg as a visitable attraction. Because exhibitions and access conditions change, check the official links again close to the visit date.

A coherent itinerary is still possible without entering the historic building: a clearly identified Constellation activity, advance research in the digital collection, and a Paris institution with its own program. The essential precaution is not to confuse Centre Pompidou’s continued activity with the opening of its headquarters.
