Galatasaray beat Lille 4-2 after decisive second half

Torreira and Osimhen scored after Diaoune had turned the match around for the French side

Galatasaray beat Lille 4-2 on October 21, 2026, in the third matchday of the UEFA Champions League league phase. The Turkish club scored first, fell behind following two Soriba Diaoune goals, equalized before half-time and settled the match through Lucas Torreira and Victor Osimhen early in the second half. The result gave Galatasaray their first points, while Lille suffered a third defeat in three games.

Six goals and two changes of direction

According to the match report and official match sheet published by LOSC, Yunus Akgün opened the scoring in the second minute. Lille responded quickly: Alexsandro drove forward through the middle and found Diaoune, who rounded the goalkeeper and equalized in the eighth minute.

Lille then began creating the better opportunities. In the 39th minute, Dilane Bakwa had a shot saved; Hakon Haraldsson collected the loose ball and supplied Diaoune, who finished to make it 2-1. The lead did not last long. Batrakov headed in a cross from the right to level the score in the 44th minute.

The confirmed scoring order was Akgün (2), Diaoune (8 and 39), Batrakov (44), Torreira (52) and Osimhen (61).

Galatasaray carried their momentum through half-time

The decisive factor was the way Galatasaray restarted the contest. In the 52nd minute, Torreira headed in at the near post from a corner. Nine minutes later, Osimhen finished a counterattack to extend the lead to 4-2.

Those two plays changed Lille’s task. The home side had controlled a portion of the first half and managed to come from behind, but now needed two goals against a team able to protect a lead. LOSC’s report records a long-range Nabil Bentaleb effort in the 71st minute and a Maurits Kjaergaard attempt that went wide in the 82nd, but describes the attacking output as insufficient to disrupt the Turkish block.

Why the key moments explain Lille’s defeat

The timeline reveals more than the final score. Lille conceded in the second minute, were breached immediately before half-time and allowed a third goal soon after play resumed. Those were three blows at moments capable of redefining a team’s approach.

In his official post-match reaction, Davide Ancelotti highlighted precisely that failure to manage decisive moments. The coach also cited lost duels, poor positioning inside the box and the breakdown of collective organization after the two second-half goals.

That assessment does not erase Diaoune’s strong individual performance. Ancelotti praised his qualities, humility and ability to help the team. The first brace of Diaoune’s career, however, could not offset Galatasaray’s efficiency as the score shifted.

First points, without premature conclusions

Both clubs had lost their opening two league-phase matches. The official UEFA preview also noted that this was the first competitive meeting between Lille and Galatasaray.

The victory gave the Turkish club their first points of the league phase, while Lille remained without a point after three games. That describes the immediate situation but does not justify claims of elimination or a crisis. Ancelotti himself stressed that matches remain and the team still believes, although its Champions League performances need to change quickly.

A clear reading of the 4-2 result

Lille demonstrated resilience by turning a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead, but could not preserve it until the interval. Galatasaray restored parity in the 44th minute and returned from the break with greater precision, scoring twice in nine minutes before protecting the advantage through full time.

The central explanation is therefore the management of critical periods. The French side enjoyed a productive attacking spell and had a clear standout in Diaoune; the visitors were more effective around half-time, when the contest was ultimately decided.
