Gotham Awards 2026: What the Nominations Actually Measure

Eligibility rules, committees, and juries explain why the selection is not a direct Oscar preview.

The 2026 Gotham Awards nominations are not a direct Oscar preview. They show which work stood out within a field limited by submissions, release requirements, the Gothams’ own rules, and specialist committees. An omission may therefore reflect ineligibility, a missing submission, or one panel’s decision—not necessarily broad rejection across awards season.

Five films tied for the lead when the nominations were announced on October 27, with four apiece: *Clarissa*, *The Invite*, *All of a Sudden*, *La Gradiva*, and *Tender Loving Care*. That tally identifies titles supported across multiple categories, but it needs to be read alongside the official 2026 criteria.

The first filter: submission and an eligible release

The Gothams do not begin with every film released worldwide. To enter the competitive process, a title must be submitted by the deadline and made available to the committees through a password-protected link or virtual screening room. The rules state that 2026 submissions closed on September 17.

Features must run longer than 70 minutes. Broadly, they must be scheduled for release between January 1 and December 31, 2026, with a confirmed date by the submission deadline. For most categories, the film must play to paying audiences for at least seven consecutive days in one of six qualifying U.S. metropolitan areas: New York, Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, Chicago, Dallas–Fort Worth, or Atlanta.

Those conditions already complicate any interpretation of an omission. A film might be absent because it was not submitted, because its release plan falls outside the window, or because it did not satisfy another requirement. The nominations alone do not disclose which explanation applies to any particular missing title.

Best Feature and International Feature assess different pools

Best Feature requires a specific U.S. connection. The director, producer, or writer must include U.S. citizens or people permanently based in the country, with at least two different individuals across those roles—unless an eligible American director performs at least two of them.

Best International Feature covers another pool: only films that do not qualify as U.S. productions in Best Feature may compete. They need a theatrical run of at least seven consecutive days in their country of origin during 2026, but no U.S. release is required. The criteria add that the key director, producer, and screenwriter should be based outside the United States and should not be U.S. citizens. That wording is best understood as a stated expectation, not rewritten as an unconditional “must.”

The distinction is visible among the leaders. According to the list published by *Slant Magazine*, *Clarissa* and *The Invite* compete for Best Feature, while *All of a Sudden*, *La Gradiva*, and *Tender Loving Care* are in Best International Feature. Four nominations do not mean that every title followed the same eligibility route.

Who chooses the nominees and winners

There are three separate stages. First, an Executive Criteria Committee made up of Gotham staff and board members checks submitted films against the rules. Nominating committees then watch the eligible titles and determine the nominees.

Those panels consist of critics, journalists, curators, festival programmers, and others who are not directly involved in film production or distribution. Winners, however, are selected by final juries of filmmakers, frequently including directors, writers, producers, editors, actors, cinematographers, and other people directly involved in making films. Executives at companies that release or sell films do not participate at any stage of these selections.

A nomination consequently records one committee’s judgment within the material available to it. A win reflects a different panel. Neither decision amounts to an industry-wide vote.

Acting categories have their own limits

The Gothams do not divide acting awards by gender. In 2026, the competitive fields include lead performance, supporting performance, and breakthrough performer. Up to ten performances may be nominated in each of the first two categories, and the rules provide for two winners in both lead and supporting performance.

The breakthrough category is narrower. The performance does not have to be an artist’s first screen role, but it should be the first to demonstrate the breadth of their talent or suggest significant future accomplishment. Performers who had already won or been nominated for major film or television awards named in the criteria before 2026—or who had previously been nominated in any Gotham acting category—are ineligible.

An omission here can therefore result from a performer’s prior recognition rather than a negative judgment of the current work. If a performance could fit both breakthrough and another acting category, the executive criteria committee decides its placement.

What the Gothams signal—and what they do not

The Gothams arrive early in awards season and can raise the visibility of films and artists. The five 2026 leaders show support distributed across fields. *The Invite*, for example, appears in Best Feature, adapted screenplay, supporting performance for Penélope Cruz, and the audience award. *All of a Sudden* is nominated for International Feature, director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, adapted screenplay, and supporting performer Tao Okamoto.

That still does not establish equivalence with the Oscars. The awards are run by different institutions and use different electorates, categories, and rules. The safer interpretation is to identify where support exists—film, directing, writing, or acting—without turning the nomination count into a mathematical probability for another ceremony.

The ceremony is scheduled for November 30, 2026, according to the official Gotham Awards website. Until then, the nominations work better as a map of critical attention within the Gothams’ framework than as an advance list of winners elsewhere. Dates and conditions may change, so check the official links.
