Jalen Hurts: confirmed diagnosis and no return date yet

Injured reserve records his absence, but clearance for contact depends on medical treatment.

Jalen Hurts is on the Philadelphia Eagles’ injured reserve list and cannot take part in contact activities while using anticoagulants. As of October 20, 2026, however, there is no official date for his return. The roster transaction confirms his absence from the active roster; his ability to play football again depends on a later medical decision.

What diagnosis has been confirmed

In a statement published by the Eagles on October 19, the team said additional examinations identified deep vein thrombosis and bilateral pulmonary emboli. The initial assessment in London had found a superficial vein thrombosis in his left calf.

According to the statement, Hurts is clinically stable and has no significant functional limitations. The planned treatment involves anticoagulation. While taking that medication, he will not be allowed to participate in contact activities, including football.

That is the key fact for understanding the case: being able to continue conditioning is not the same as being cleared to absorb contact on the field.

What injured reserve confirms

The Eagles placed Hurts on Injured Reserve on October 17. The NFL transaction record confirms the move on that date and lists the player as “Reserve/Injured.”

The team’s announcement of the transaction also said the resulting opening on the active roster was used to promote running back Jaydon Blue. The list therefore establishes Hurts’ roster status at that point and allows the team to reorganize its available places.

It does not operate as a medical calendar. The NFL entry provides no clearance date and does not override the restrictions announced by the physicians.

Why there is still no official date

The statement sets a condition rather than a day: Hurts may resume contact football activities after he is no longer taking anticoagulants and receives the corresponding clearance. It does not say when the treatment will end.

The NFL reported that Hurts is likely to miss the rest of the 2026 season. That report attributes an expected three-month treatment period to journalists. It provides a reported estimate, not an official return date announced by the Eagles.

Two statements can therefore be true at once: a return in 2026 is considered unlikely in the report, and the team has not officially set the date when Hurts may play again.

What he can do during treatment

The Eagles said Hurts will remain active around the team and continue conditioning. At the same time, the restriction on contact expressly includes football.

That distinction prevents a misleading interpretation of training images or the quarterback’s presence at team facilities. Taking part in a non-contact routine does not demonstrate clearance for full practice or a game.

What to watch for in future updates

A meaningful update would need to clarify at least one of these points: the end of anticoagulant use, medical clearance for contact, or a formal change in the player’s roster status. Without such information, any exact date would be speculation.

Because medical conditions and roster records can change, readers should check official Philadelphia Eagles news and NFL transactions before treating a projection as confirmation.

In summary

Hurts has a disclosed diagnosis, is clinically stable and remains barred from contact during treatment. Injured reserve confirms his removal from the active roster but does not determine when the medical restriction will end. Published expectations point to an absence for the remainder of 2026; an official return date remains open.
