Lakers in the NBA Cup: loss leaves a minus-17 differential

Los Angeles can still advance, but it lost the head-to-head matchup with Golden State and opened West Group C at a disadvantage.

The Lakers have not been eliminated from the NBA Cup. Their 112-95 loss to the Golden State Warriors on Oct. 30 left Los Angeles at 0-1 with a minus-17 point differential, but three West Group C games remain. The practical consequence is twofold: the Lakers lost an important head-to-head matchup and now need a recovery that also protects their tiebreaker position.

The early Group C picture

In the standings snapshot after the opener, Golden State has one win, no losses and a plus-17 differential. The Lakers have one loss and a minus-17 differential. The Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings and San Antonio Spurs had not yet played their first Cup games in that snapshot.

The standings recorded after the game therefore place the Warriors first and the Lakers provisionally fifth. That early order requires context: three teams were still 0-0, and every club will play four Group Play games.

Why 0-1 does not mean elimination

Under the official NBA Cup format, the league’s 30 teams are divided into five-team groups. Each club plays the other four members once. The six group winners — three per conference — advance along with the best second-place team in each conference.

The Lakers can therefore still finish 3-1. That record would not guarantee advancement because other results and, if needed, tiebreakers would determine the outcome. It nevertheless leaves enough games for Los Angeles to compete for either the group title or the Western Conference wild card.

The cost of losing the head-to-head matchup

Within a group, head-to-head record is the first tiebreaker. Because the Lakers have already lost to Golden State, a final tie between the two teams favors the Warriors when their meeting resolves that tie.

A tie involving more teams would depend on the records and games among those teams. The opening loss is not automatic elimination, but Los Angeles has used its only opportunity to beat Golden State during Group Play.

Why the minus-17 differential matters

After head-to-head record, the official order uses point differential, total points scored, the 2025-26 regular-season record and, finally, a random drawing. The competition’s official standings page displays that tiebreaker sequence.

The 112-95 result put the Lakers 17 points below zero. Narrow wins would repair their record but could leave the differential exposed in a tie. Positive margins totaling exactly 17 points over the final three games would bring the differential to zero; more than 17 would make it positive. Neither figure is an official target or a guarantee of qualification.

Head-to-head record is excluded when second-place teams from different groups are compared for the wild card. Record, differential and points scored consequently take on added importance. Any ties within the individual groups are resolved before that wild-card comparison.

The three remaining games

The Lakers’ remaining Group C opponents are Portland, Sacramento and San Antonio. The NBA’s group preview lists Portland at Los Angeles on Nov. 6 and the Lakers at San Antonio on Nov. 27; the schedule also lists Sacramento at Los Angeles on Nov. 20.

The useful order of attention is wins first, the results of Golden State and the other rivals second, then cumulative point differential. Winning all three would take the Lakers to 3-1 and keep both qualification routes open. Another loss would sharply reduce their margin for error, although its exact effect would depend on the complete standings.

What happened in the opener

The loss was particularly damaging because Los Angeles led by 25 points. According to the game recap, the Lakers won the first quarter 38-15 before the Warriors answered with the identical score in the second. Stephen Curry finished with 31 points, while Luka Dončić had 37.

For qualification purposes, individual performances and the shape of the comeback are secondary. The decisive figures are 0-1, a lost head-to-head matchup and a minus-17 differential. Because the standings change after every Cup night, readers should check the official page before the next games.
