Manchester City started against Brighton with Donnarumma; Nunes, Khusanov, Rúben Dias and Gvardiol; Ayyoub Bouaddi, Elliot Anderson and Enzo Fernández; Iliman Ndiaye, Jérémy Doku and Erling Haaland. Compared with the team that had started the clubs’ League Cup meeting, Bouaddi was the only starter retained. The ten players brought into the lineup were therefore Donnarumma, Nunes, Khusanov, Dias, Gvardiol, Anderson, Fernández, Ndiaye, Doku and Haaland.
The Premier League match was played at the Etihad Stadium on October 31, 2026, and Brighton won 1-0. Yasin Ayari scored in the 11th minute, according to the Sky Sports lineup and result page. This is consequently a retrospective explanation of Enzo Maresca’s ten changes, not a predicted lineup published before the game.

Who came in as part of the ten changes
The count comes from the club’s comparison with the starting eleven used in the penalty-shootout League Cup win over Brighton, after a 2-2 draw in regulation time. Manchester City’s official team news identifies Bouaddi as the only player to keep his starting place.
That makes the other ten members of the Premier League eleven the incoming players: Gianluigi Donnarumma, Matheus Nunes, Abdukodir Khusanov, Rúben Dias, Josko Gvardiol, Elliot Anderson, Enzo Fernández, Iliman Ndiaye, Jérémy Doku and Erling Haaland. “Ten changes” does not mean ten in-game substitutions, nor does it necessarily mean ten absences. It describes the difference between two consecutive starting lineups.
The official source also says that Nunes returned after missing several matches through injury. It gives no individual reason for the other nine additions. The lineup therefore does not establish that each switch resulted from an injury, suspension or disciplinary decision.

How City arranged the starting team
City announced a 4-3-3 structure. Donnarumma returned in goal. Nunes started at right-back, Khusanov partnered captain Rúben Dias in central defence, and Gvardiol played at left-back.
In midfield, the club’s pre-match reading had Bouaddi and Anderson protecting the back four, with Enzo Fernández in a more advanced central role. Ndiaye and Doku were placed on the attacking flanks, while Haaland started through the middle.
That description shows the scale of the rotation: there were incoming starters in goal, at all four defensive positions, in two of the three midfield places and across the entire front three. Bouaddi provided the sole element of continuity. That does not mean the previous match’s entire tactical arrangement was repeated; it means only that he was the one player common to both starting elevens.

Who was on the bench
Manchester City named Rulli, Guéhi, Kovačić, Cherki, Reis, O’Reilly, Allan, Foden and Lewis as substitutes. The confirmed squad thus shows that players including Rayan Cherki and Phil Foden were available from the bench, without establishing Maresca’s internal reasons for not starting them.
During the match, Cherki replaced Bouaddi in the 55th minute; O’Reilly came on for Enzo Fernández in the 64th; and Allan and Foden entered in the 79th minute for Gvardiol and Ndiaye. The changes and timings also appear in Manchester City’s official match report.
Brighton’s confirmed lineup
Brighton started with Verbruggen; Costinha, Dunk, Vuskovic and Boscagli; Chema, Gross and Ayari; Gomez, De Cuyper and Kostoulas. Steele, Hadjam, Hinshelwood, Georginio, Minteh, Wieffer, Svoboda, O’Riley and Yalcouye were listed among the substitutes in City’s team announcement.
Ayari settled the match early. According to Manchester City’s official account, the move began with a low cross: Nunes failed to clear, the ball struck De Cuyper and reached the scorer. Brighton protected the lead through full time and recorded their first away victory over City.
What the selection shows — and what it does not
The verified point is that City carried out extensive rotation between two competitions played in the same week. Ten starters changed after the League Cup encounter, while prominent players including Donnarumma, Dias and Haaland returned for the Premier League. The published shape remained a 4-3-3, with changes across every unit.
The result does not automatically make the rotation the cause of the defeat. City’s post-match coverage records Maresca saying the reaction after conceding was good and that the team needed to be more clinical in the penalty area. Elliot Anderson likewise said City created chances but did not convert them.
The defensible conclusion is narrower: Bouaddi carried over from the cup team, ten players came into the eleven, and a substantially refreshed City side lost 1-0. Individual explanations beyond Nunes’s documented return would require additional comments from the club or manager.
