NFC South: Falcons–Saints winner will match Carolina at 2–2

The division matchup gives the winner an even record; the loser falls to 1–3

The winner of Atlanta Falcons vs. New Orleans Saints on Monday, October 5, 2026, will match the Carolina Panthers’ 2–2 record and earn a division win. The loser will fall to 1–3. A tie would leave the Falcons and Saints at 1–2–1, while Carolina would remain alone with the NFC South’s best record at 2–2.

That does not establish in advance that the winner will formally occupy first place after every applicable tiebreaker. The certain consequence is narrower: Atlanta or New Orleans will match Carolina in winning percentage and add a relevant result for possible division tiebreakers.

How the weekend put Carolina ahead

Carolina moved to the best record in the group by beating Detroit 32–26 on Sunday night. The result improved the Panthers to 2–2. According to Carolina’s official recap, Tetairoa McMillan finished with 14 catches for 192 yards and two touchdowns, while Chuba Hubbard ran 20 times for 122 yards and two touchdowns.

Tampa Bay went in the opposite direction. A 17–14 loss to Green Bay dropped the Buccaneers to 0–4, their first four-loss start since 2013. Tampa Bay’s official recap notes that the team produced two takeaways in the fourth quarter but converted neither into points.

The division picture before Falcons–Saints is therefore straightforward: Carolina is 2–2, Atlanta and New Orleans enter at 1–2, and Tampa Bay is 0–4.

The scenario if Atlanta wins

A Falcons victory gives Atlanta a 2–2 record and leaves the Saints at 1–3. Atlanta would also hold one head-to-head win over New Orleans and one NFC South victory—two facts that could matter if the teams finish the season with identical winning percentages.

The result would neither eliminate Carolina nor decide the division in Week 4. It would simply create two teams with equal overall records, Carolina and Atlanta, at a stage when many games remain and not all comparable criteria are complete. Nor is one Falcons–Panthers result, considered alone, necessarily enough to declare a final order without reviewing the full applicable tiebreaking process.

The scenario if New Orleans wins

If the Saints win, they will also improve to 2–2, while the Falcons fall to 1–3. It would be New Orleans’ first division win of the campaign because the Saints’ official preview identifies this matchup as the start of the team’s NFC South schedule.

New Orleans would also gain the initial head-to-head advantage over Atlanta. It is only an initial advantage because the rivals can meet again; one win now does not settle a tie by itself at the end of the season.

The matchup carries historical context. The Falcons lead the regular-season series 57–56 and swept the two 2025 games. A Saints victory would level the all-time regular-season series at 57–57. The same preview says 39 meetings since 1991 have been decided by eight points or fewer, and eight games in the rivalry have gone to overtime.

What a tie would mean

A tie would move Atlanta and New Orleans to 1–2–1. Under the NFL’s official rules, a tied game counts as half a win and half a loss for each club. Both teams’ percentages would remain below Carolina’s 2–2 mark, leaving the Panthers alone with the group’s best overall record.

That outcome would also give the Falcons and Saints a tie in both their head-to-head meeting and this division game. Any later comparison would depend on the remaining results and, if necessary, the official tiebreaking sequence.

How the first division tiebreakers work

When two clubs in the same division finish the regular season with identical won-lost-tied percentages, the NFL first uses head-to-head results. If they remain level, the second criterion is the best percentage in division games.

Next, in order, come winning percentage in common games and conference games. Strength of victory and strength of schedule appear later. Falcons–Saints therefore carries extra value because it combines the first two elements: it is both a head-to-head meeting and a division game.

For a tie involving three or more clubs, the NFL begins with the best percentage in games among the tied teams and then moves to division record. Equal overall records after this week alone do not guarantee a formal position without applying the appropriate procedure.

When and where the game is played

The Falcons and Saints play at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Monday, October 5, 2026, at 7:15 p.m. Central Daylight Time. Check the Saints’ official Game Center for any changes to game information.

The meeting also extends a recent chapter of the rivalry: Atlanta beat New Orleans 19–17 in their latest regular-season matchup on January 4, 2026. This time, the essential standings guide is clear: the winner reaches 2–2, the loser goes to 1–3, and a tie leaves Carolina alone with the group’s best record.
