Rafael Câmara at Haas: contract, F2 and possible debut

The Brazilian will partner Oliver Bearman in 2027, already meets the sporting requirement for a super licence and is still fighting for the Formula 2 title.

Rafael Câmara will be a full-time Haas driver in 2027, will partner Oliver Bearman and has already earned the points required for a super licence. The first race on the calendar is scheduled for March 12–14 in Bahrain, but that is only the earliest possible opportunity for his debut during an F1 weekend—not an appearance that the calendar alone can guarantee.

The signing settles the main question about the Brazilian’s next step, but not his current season: as of October 15, 2026, he was still leading Formula 2 with two rounds remaining.

What the Haas signing confirms

The Haas news page lists the confirmation of Câmara for 2027 on October 14. According to ge, the driver signed a multi-year agreement, takes Esteban Ocon’s seat and will be under contract through at least the end of 2028.

This means the deal was not announced as a trial limited to one season. Even so, “multi-year” does not, by itself, reveal every sporting or contractual condition. The confirmed point is that Câmara was selected for a full-time seat in 2027.

The Pernambuco-born driver, who is from Recife, will team up with Englishman Oliver Bearman. Both came through Ferrari’s young-driver academy. With Câmara and Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto, Brazil is set to have two representatives on the grid again; that last happened in 2016, when Felipe Massa and Felipe Nasr contested the season.

Why the super licence is not the obstacle

The super licence is the credential required to compete in Formula 1. Câmara has already secured the necessary sporting points by winning Formula 3 in 2025, according to ge. His promotion therefore does not depend on finishing the current F2 season in a particular position to obtain those points.

The record on his official Formula 2 profile shows a rapid rise: third in both Italian and German Formula 4 in 2022, Formula Regional European champion in 2024 and F3 champion with Trident in 2025. He moved up to F2 with Invicta Racing in 2026.

Having the sporting points resolves an important part of his eligibility. It does not mean, however, that he has already contested an F1 race: signing, eligibility and an actual debut are separate milestones.

What Câmara is still fighting for in Formula 2

His final season on the feeder ladder still matters in its own right. On October 15, the championship’s official profile showed Câmara leading with 207 points. Ge listed Nikola Tsolov on 200 and Alexander Dunne on 189, with the Qatar and Abu Dhabi rounds remaining.

During the campaign, Câmara won the Feature Races in Barcelona and Spa-Francorchamps. Formula 2 also highlighted his five podiums and four pole positions at the point when its feature was published. The driver said he was trying to focus on his work with Invicta even as speculation about 2027 circulated.

The Haas contract therefore does not turn the final F2 races into a formality. Câmara enters them defending the championship lead and seeking to add another title after his Formula Regional European and F3 successes.

When his first 2027 appearance could take place

The official Formula 1 calendar schedules pre-season testing in Bahrain from February 24 to 27. The opening round will take place in the same country from March 12 to 14. If Câmara retains the seat and participates in the opener as expected, this will be his first official Grand Prix weekend as a full-time driver.

The two dates should be distinguished. February testing could be his first official activity of the season in the 2027 car, but it would not constitute a race debut. The Bahrain Grand Prix is the first opportunity to take part in practice, qualifying and a race within a championship round.

None of the cited sources provides an individual testing schedule for Câmara. The calendar may also change. Dates and arrangements should therefore be checked again through the official Haas and F1 links closer to the start of the season.

What changes for Brazilian motorsport

Câmara’s arrival expands Brazil’s presence without making the two projects identical: he will race for Haas, while Bortoleto remains associated with Audi. For Câmara, the central change is the move from the feeder series into a full-time race seat after already driving Ferrari Formula 1 cars in tests.

According to ge, he will become the first driver born in Brazil’s Northeast to participate in the category once he actually starts a race. Until that happens, the precise description is that he is a Haas driver confirmed for 2027—not a driver who has already made his debut.

The immediate sporting marker remains the conclusion of the F2 season. Bahrain testing will then provide the first official window of 2027, while the March 12–14 opener will be the first chance to turn the contract into a Grand Prix debut.
