Tank Dell: official status before Texans vs. Giants

The receiver has returned to practice, but must still leave injured reserve before he can face New York.

Tank Dell could return against the New York Giants, but his participation has not been confirmed. As of October 19, 2026, the Houston Texans’ official roster classifies him as “Reserve/Injured; Designated for Return.” That means the return process is open, but he remains outside the active roster and cannot play while holding that status.

Houston hosts New York in Week 7 on October 25 at 12 p.m. CDT at Reliant Stadium. Before then, the decisive development would be Dell’s activation, followed by the injury report and, closer to kickoff, the inactive list.

What the official status tells us

On the Texans’ roster page, Dell is the only player listed under “Reserve/Injured; Designated for Return.” The roster identifies him as No. 1 at WR and separates active players from those on other reserve lists and the practice squad.

That distinction matters: “designated for return” does not mean “cleared to play.” According to the NFL’s explanation of injured reserve, a player on Reserve/Injured is not eligible to represent his team in a game. The designation allows the return process to move forward, but the club must still transfer him to the active roster before he can play.

The accurate answer today is therefore conditional: Dell has an administrative route back, but he is not confirmed against the Giants.

Why practicing is not the same as being available

Dell had already resumed team work during training camp. In a report published August 10, the Texans’ website documented his offensive team-drill reps, including a catch from Davis Mills during a red-zone period.

That account establishes that he took part in that particular practice; it does not establish availability for October 25. Practicing, receiving a return designation, joining the active roster and being available on game day are separate steps. It would also be unsafe to turn participation in team drills into a medical prognosis or a promise that he will play.

The latest injury report does not settle Week 7

In Houston’s Week 6 injury report, Dell was a full participant Wednesday and Thursday, did not practice Friday and received an OUT designation for the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The table listed his knee.

That confirms only that he would not play in that week’s game. The Week 6 report does not automatically determine his Week 7 condition. A new week requires new official information, and changes in practice participation should not be interpreted on their own as improvement, deterioration or a setback.

What must happen before Texans vs. Giants

The indispensable first step is activation to the roster. As long as Dell remains in the “Reserve/Injured; Designated for Return” section, he is not eligible to play. After an activation, the Week 7 injury report could show his practice participation and, once issued, his game designation.

The safest sequence for readers to check is:

1. a transaction or change on the official roster;

2. the Week 7 injury report;

3. the inactive list released close to kickoff.

None of those signals should be replaced by practice clips, general comments or the existence of the return designation alone. Because his status can change, readers should check the Texans’ official links before the game.

How activation would change Houston’s options

The Texans’ active roster currently lists Nico Collins, Kayshon Boutte, Marvin Harrison Jr., Xavier Hutchinson and Jaylin Noel at wide receiver. Activating Dell would add him to that available group, expanding the receiving alternatives the staff could select for the matchup.

There is an important limit to any projection. The cited sources do not confirm a snap count, a place in the target hierarchy, a starting assignment or a particular role for Dell. Activation would make his use possible; it would not guarantee targets or involvement in a specific play. Lineup and usage decisions would remain with the team.

When and where the game will be played

The official Texans vs. Giants page schedules the Week 7 matchup for Sunday, October 25, 2026, at 12 p.m. CDT at Reliant Stadium. That leaves a short window for Houston to update its roster and publish the new injury report.

Until that happens, the precise conclusion is straightforward: Tank Dell is on a path that could allow him to face the Giants, but he is not officially available yet. Confirmation requires removal from injured reserve and no subsequent game-status obstacle.
