UEFA coefficient: how to compare France and Portugal

The association formula reveals the weight of results, bonuses and entrant numbers

The UEFA association coefficient adds the points earned by each country’s clubs in the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League, then divides the result by the number of entrants from that association. Wins, draws and bonuses earned by French and Portuguese teams therefore affect the comparison between the countries. However, the consulted sources do not display the numerical standings for October 23, 2026: they do not confirm that France is fifth, that Portugal is directly behind it or what the gap might be.

What the association coefficient measures

The UEFA rankings overview distinguishes the association coefficient from the club coefficient. The first combines the results of a country’s representatives and helps determine how many entries the association receives in future seasons. The second considers one team’s performance and is used for its seeding in draws.

To compare France and Portugal, readers must consult the association table. The individual position of Paris Saint-Germain, Marseille, Benfica, Sporting or another club cannot replace that collective ranking.

How the season coefficient is calculated

Under the rule published on UEFA’s country-coefficient page, UEFA adds the points collected by all clubs from an association across the three competitions and divides the total by the number of entrants from that country.

Under the general rule, a win is worth two points, a draw one and a defeat none. In qualifying and play-off matches, a win is worth one point and a draw half a point. The coefficient is calculated to the thousandth without being rounded up.

A purely mathematical example: 12 points divided by six entrants produces 2.000; the same 12 points divided by four produces 3.000. These figures are not current totals for France or Portugal.

Why results and divisors matter

Each match’s impact depends on the number of clubs used as the divisor. With six entrants, a two-point win would add approximately 0.333 to the season coefficient; with seven, about 0.285. A draw would add approximately 0.166 or 0.142. These denominators are examples, not current-season data.

Bonuses also enter the calculation. A club’s final league-phase position can produce additional points. Reaching the round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals or final also awards, per round, 1.5 points in the Champions League, one in the Europa League and 0.5 in the Conference League. Progress in a competition can therefore keep contributing to the national coefficient even without a direct meeting between French and Portuguese clubs.

Which seasons count toward the ranking

The association coefficient covers five seasons. UEFA provides a completed example: the 2026/27 access list was based on the cumulative total from 2020/21 through 2024/25, established at the end of 2024/25. An in-progress ranking should therefore not be confused with an access list already used to allocate places.

UEFA says its rankings are updated after each completed round. A current comparison requires checking both the displayed five-season window and the consultation date. When an old season leaves the window and another enters, the cumulative figure can change even before all new results are considered.

A country coefficient is not a club coefficient

The club-coefficient page explains that a team’s five-season sporting coefficient is either its own total or 20% of its association’s coefficient, whichever is higher. UEFA also calculates a ten-season revenue coefficient used only for revenue distribution.

These metrics do not replace the country ranking. UEFA provides guaranteed minimums for clubs in certain Europa League and Conference League phases, but states that those minimums are excluded from the association coefficient. Applicable match points and bonuses, in contrast, enter the collective calculation.

How to compare France and Portugal safely

Consult the official country table after a completed round and record the position, total, included seasons and consultation date. Then check how many clubs form each association’s divisor and which can still earn points or bonuses.

Only the updated table can confirm whether France is fifth, whether Portugal is the next country and what separates them. The extracted material explains the method but does not display those figures for October 23, 2026. Because the standings change, verify the numbers through the official link before citing them as current.

If associations are level, UEFA first compares their coefficients from the most recent season in the window. If they remain tied, it uses the next most recent season in which their figures differ. Goal difference and meetings between national teams are not used.

How to assess a matchday

Add the points and any bonuses earned by French clubs, divide by France’s denominator and repeat the calculation for Portugal. Compare the season contributions first and then the five-season cumulative totals. This avoids assigning identical impact to wins by associations with different divisors or announcing an overtake before the official update.

Penalty shoot-outs do not count separately toward match points: UEFA uses the ratified final score. A responsible comparison therefore relies on completed rounds, ratified results and the published table, without projecting future matches.
