Wagner Moura: Cannes win and Oscar nomination explained

Official records show why the two honors for The Secret Agent are not equivalent.

Wagner Moura won the Best Performance by an Actor award at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival for *The Secret Agent*. At the 2026 Oscars, he competed in the leading actor category, but Michael B. Jordan won for *Sinners*. The accurate wording is therefore straightforward: Moura won at Cannes and was nominated for an Oscar.

That distinction does not diminish either achievement. It simply follows the results published by the two institutions and avoids turning a significant nomination into a win that did not occur.

What Wagner Moura won at Cannes

The official list of winners from the 78th Festival de Cannes identifies Wagner Moura as the Best Performance by an Actor winner for *The Secret Agent*. The result was announced on May 24, 2025.

In comments reproduced by the festival and delivered by telephone, Moura said he had never imagined winning the award and connected the recognition to work he had pursued over several years. He also expressed pride in taking part in a film that presents Brazilian culture.

This was an individual acting award. It was not a nomination, a preliminary selection or a career tribute: Cannes officially declared Moura the winner of that category.

The film also earned an award for Kleber Mendonça Filho

The official Cannes page for *The Secret Agent* records two awards in the 2025 competition: Best Actor for Wagner Moura and Best Director for Kleber Mendonça Filho. The credits should be kept separate because each award recognized different work.

The page describes the feature as a Brazil, France, Netherlands and Germany co-production, written and directed by Kleber. The story is set in Brazil in 1977. Marcelo, a technology expert in his early forties, arrives in Recife during Carnival week while on the run and hoping to reunite with his son. The city, however, does not provide the nonviolent refuge he sought.

The film competed in the feature-film competition and runs 158 minutes, according to the festival. These details provide the relevant context: Moura was honored for a specific performance in a film whose direction was also awarded.

What happened at the 2026 Oscars

At the 98th Academy Awards, Wagner Moura was one of five nominees for Actor in a Leading Role for *The Secret Agent*. The Academy’s official record of the 2026 ceremony identifies Michael B. Jordan as the winner for *Sinners*.

The other nominees were Timothée Chalamet for *Marty Supreme*, Leonardo DiCaprio for *One Battle after Another* and Ethan Hawke for *Blue Moon*. Because the Academy explicitly distinguishes the “Winner” from the “Nominees,” Moura’s candidacy cannot accurately be described as a victory.

The ceremony took place on March 15, 2026, and honored films released in 2025. The chronology is clear as well: the Cannes victory came first, in 2025, followed by the Oscar nomination at the 2026 ceremony.

A nomination is not a win, but it is an official result

A nomination means reaching a category’s final group of contenders. Winning means being selected from that group. In articles, searches and social media posts, “Oscar nominee” and “Cannes winner” are the accurate descriptions for Moura.

His nomination should not be confused with the film’s other appearances at the Oscars. *The Secret Agent* was nominated for Best Picture, with Emilie Lesclaux credited as producer, and represented Brazil among the International Feature Film nominees. *One Battle after Another* won Best Picture, while Norway’s *Sentimental Value* won International Feature Film. The Brazilian production also received a Casting nomination for Gabriel Domingues.

Those nominations broadened the film’s presence at the ceremony, but they did not change the result in the leading actor category.

How to verify award claims

To check a claim about an award, look for three elements in the institution’s record: the category, the contender’s name and the label identifying a winner or nominee. It is also important to determine whether the recognition belongs to an actor, a director or the film itself.

For Moura, the check can be reduced to two entries: Cannes records the “Award for Best Actor 2025” on the film’s page; the Academy lists him among the nominees and marks someone else as the winner. Promotional pages, informal lists and shortened headlines do not replace those records.

Streaming catalogs can vary by territory and change over time. The official sources used for this article do not confirm the current availability of *Narcos*, *Sergio* or *The Secret Agent* in Brazil. Before subscribing to or renting from a service, check its official Brazilian catalog on the date you intend to watch.
