Ceremonia has not been announced as a biography or a literal reconstruction of Barcelona 92. Movistar Plus’s new comedy draws on a real event—the preparation of the Olympic Games opening ceremony—but introduces Miguel and Júlia as characters in a fictional story set in 1991. Its release is scheduled only for 2027, with no confirmed date yet.

What Movistar Plus has confirmed
According to the official Ceremonia announcement, filming is taking place at different locations in Barcelona. The production will consist of six 30-minute episodes and is a collaboration between Movistar Plus, Charlie Pisco Producciones and Studio TF1’s Kubik Films.
Cristóbal Garrido and Adolfo Valor created and wrote the series. Valor directs episodes 1, 5 and 6, while Paco Caballero directs episodes 2, 3 and 4. David Verdaguer plays Miguel, described as a talent working in the shadows, and Paula Malia plays Júlia, a novice producer.
The cast also includes Silvia Abril, Andreu Buenafuente, María León, Alex Brendemühl, Jorge Usón, Pau Durá, Biel Antón, Eric Massip, César Tormo, Nuria Casas, Marcel Borràs and Nao Albet. Announced locations include the Olympic Stadium, the Picornell swimming pools, the airport, Barceloneta and streets retaining the appearance of pre-Olympic Barcelona.

Are Miguel and Júlia real people?
As of November 3, 2026, there is no official basis for claiming that Miguel and Júlia represent specific historical professionals. Movistar introduces them by name and dramatic function, but does not identify them as versions of real participants or provide links between the other characters and members of the 1992 organizing team.
The most accurate description is therefore that Ceremonia is fiction inspired by preparations for a historical event. That allows room for invented situations and characters, even as the production uses real places and reconstructs the context of 1991. Without further official material, calling the series a biography or assigning each role to a real individual would turn speculation into fact.

What happened at the Barcelona 92 opening
The historical ceremony took place on July 25, 1992, at Montjuïc Olympic Stadium. RTVE’s archive on the Games records the participation of Montserrat Caballé, Josep Carreras, Plácido Domingo and Alfredo Kraus. La Fura dels Baus staged a mythological sequence in which Hercules separated Europe and Africa, creating the Mediterranean and the future city of Barcelona.
Another defining moment involved the Olympic flame. Canoeist Herminio Menéndez carried the torch into the stadium and handed it to Juan Antonio San Epifanio, known as Epi. He lit the arrow shot by Paralympic archer Antonio Rebollo. According to RTVE, the arrow passed over the cauldron; the television angle created the impression that it entered the vessel directly.
These names and actions belong to the historical record. They help identify the world inspiring the series, but their presence in the archive does not confirm that every one of them will be dramatized in Ceremonia.
Preparations also transformed the city
The Games ran from July 25 to August 9, 1992, and brought together 9,365 athletes from 169 countries, according to RTVE’s retrospective. The same archive describes an extensive urban transformation, with works designed to have lasting effects and the involvement of residents, businesses and institutions in supporting the organization.
That context gives the comedy’s premise its scale: the fictional group is not working solely on a television spectacle, but within a project that mobilized Barcelona. Locations such as the Olympic Stadium and Barceloneta may visually connect the narrative to this process. Only the completed episodes, however, will show how much of the urban transformation enters the story.
Where to revisit the original ceremony
The opening ceremony page on RTVE Play offers an archive video lasting 7 minutes and 23 seconds. Its synopsis highlights La Fura dels Baus, Montserrat Caballé, Epi and Antonio Rebollo. Because online availability can change, check the official link directly.
RTVE’s broader historical retrospective adds material on the bid, preparations, ceremonies, music and sporting participation. Watching the short video first and then consulting the dossier is a useful way to separate documentary images from the dramatic choices the comedy may make.
When will Ceremonia be released?
The only confirmed window is 2027 on Movistar Plus. No day or month has been announced, and there is no confirmed US release. Movistar Plus International will handle international distribution, but that does not establish territories, platforms or a timetable outside Spain. Any more precise date should be checked through the series’ official communications.
