Circle, Hanteo and IFPI: how to audit album figures

Two figures attributed to the same K-pop album can both be correct without measuring the same thing. During release week, record the exact chart, the period, the included formats and the time of consultation. Circle, Hanteo and IFPI publish different statistical products; sharing an album title does not make their results equivalent.

The focus here is editorial: reconstruct the origin of a claim before publishing it. This procedure helps identify figures without context, versions added together by the author of a post and comparisons between incompatible windows.

Start with the chart’s full name

“Circle,” “Hanteo” and “IFPI” are institutions, not units of measurement. Each maintains more than one list or statistical page.

The Circle Album Chart presents editions identified by week and date range. On a separate page, Circle’s album certification covers accumulated sales and displays thresholds of 250,000 for Platinum and 1 million for Million. A weekly position and an accumulated certification are therefore separate records within Circle itself.

Hanteo offers real-time, daily, weekly, monthly and annual views. IFPI separates global lists for overall albums, sales, streaming and vinyl. A post that gives only the institution’s name omits an essential part of the evidence.

Hanteo: record the clock, time zone and version

The Hanteo Real-time Album Chart says it counts physical record sales by K-pop artists at around 5,000 online and physical stores worldwide. The screen displays a measurement time in KST and allows users to switch between different periods.

When saving a result, note the chart mode, displayed time and time zone. A capture taken during an update does not document a daily close. Preserve the declared reach as a network of participating stores as well.

The chart reviewed shows some versions on separate lines. Check whether a claim concerns a specific edition or the album as a whole. Adding rows independently creates an editorial calculation, which is not necessarily a total published by Hanteo.

Circle: separate the week from certification

The available Album Chart material confirms complete weekly windows but does not sufficiently explain the nature of the unit. On its own, it therefore does not support labels such as “consumer sale,” “shipment” or “distribution.” Anyone using one of those terms should provide the corresponding methodological reference.

The certification page answers a different question: it reports accumulated sales and its thresholds. When citing Circle, state whether the result is a weekly position or an accumulated certification. This identification prevents two products from the same institution from being treated as interchangeable measures.

IFPI: “global” does not identify the metric

The IFPI Global Charts page displays 2025 results and four album-related lists. The Global Album Chart combines physical sales, digital downloads and streaming. Global Album Sales, Global Streaming Album and Global Vinyl Album appear as separate rankings.

“IFPI global Top 10” therefore still needs the list name and year. An annual result combining forms of consumption does not correspond to a real-time snapshot of physical sales or to one week on another chart.

Create a reproducible record

For every claim, record the institution, complete chart name, album edition, period, format and consultation time. Include the official link. Then check whether the figures use the same window, represent the same object and were published by the source itself.

Look for later corrections too. On September 22, 2026, Hanteo’s institutional page displayed notices about data verification and correction. If the period, coverage or format differs, present each result with its label, without calculating a percentage advantage or declaring a winner.
