Enem 2026 essay: what earns zero and what lowers the score

A practical table separates annulment, competency limits and recommendations, with guidance on official accessible booklets.

For Enem 2026, an essay receives a zero in situations such as completely missing the topic, writing no more than seven handwritten lines, submitting a blank sheet, identifying oneself in the essay area or failing to use the required argumentative-essay structure. Merely touching on the topic or inserting a memorized reference without connecting it to the argument does not appear as an automatic ground for annulment: those problems can limit or reduce scores in specific competencies.

This English edition is intended for international schools, educators and Brazilian candidates abroad. Enem remains a Brazilian examination; no English-speaking territorial demand, local application or official English translation of the rules was identified. The Portuguese-language Inep material therefore remains authoritative.

What can actually earn a zero

The official Inep announcement confirms that grounds for a zero or annulment include completely missing the topic, writing no more than seven lines, deliberately adding an unrelated passage, disregarding the argumentative-essay structure and failing to treat the examination seriously.

A summary published by NE10, based on the rules for this edition, also lists a blank sheet, text written predominantly or entirely in a foreign language, handwriting that two independent evaluators cannot read and improper identification in the essay area. A name, signature or initials belong only in the designated fields. For a Braille essay, the report gives a limit of up to ten lines; copied passages from the prompt or test booklet do not count toward the minimum.

Practical table: zero, limit or possible reduction

| Situation | Consequence indicated by the sources | Where the problem appears | How to avoid it |

|---|---|---|---|

| Completely missing the topic | Zero/annulment | Response to the prompt | Identify the subject, scope and task before writing |

| Not following the argumentative-essay form | Zero/annulment | Required structure | Present a position, arguments and conclusion |

| No more than seven handwritten lines | Zero for insufficient text | Length | Do not count copied prompt material as your own writing |

| Blank sheet, improper identification, predominantly foreign-language text or illegibility | May lead to zero | Formal rules | Use only the correct space and check readability |

| Drawings, insults or a deliberately unrelated passage | May lead to zero | Seriousness and relevance | Remove insertions intended to provoke annulment |

| Partial treatment of the topic (*tangenciamento*) | Not a complete miss, but it limits assessment | Competencies II, III and V | Answer the complete scope, not just the broad subject |

| Automatic or forced “pocket repertoire” | Does not itself earn zero; may harm Competency II | Relevance and usefulness of references | Explain why the reference supports the argument |

| Title | The sources read do not identify it as a cause of zero | Composition advice | Prioritize the essay and do not turn advice into an annulment rule |

The crucial distinction is between *fuga ao tema* and *tangenciamento*. According to ENEM Guru’s analysis of the 2026 booklet, partial treatment is assessed under Competency II, affects Competencies III and V, and caps each of those competencies at 40 points. That is serious, but different from the overall zero caused by completely missing the topic.

Pocket repertoire does not ban citations

Plato, Aristotle, a law, a film or a novel is not prohibited by name. The problem arises when a reference looks ready-made for any topic and performs no function in the reasoning. The booklet analysis says that a memorized, automatic or forced reference may be judged unproductive and harm Competency II; it is not on the list of grounds for annulment.

A useful editing test is to remove the citation mentally. If the argument remains exactly the same, the connection needs explanation. Rather than merely naming a work, state which of its ideas helps interpret the issue, how it relates to the prompt’s scope and why it strengthens the thesis. This is revision advice, not a new Inep rule.

How scoring works

Candidates must produce a Portuguese argumentative essay of up to 30 lines. According to Inep, two evaluators award 0 to 200 points in each of five competencies. Each evaluation may total 1,000 points, and the final score is the average of the two totals.

The competencies cover formal written Portuguese; understanding the prompt and developing the topic; selecting and organizing arguments; using linguistic mechanisms for argumentation; and proposing an intervention that respects human rights. This division explains why a localized weakness can lower one competency without necessarily annulling the entire essay.

The essay is part of the first examination day, November 8, 2026. The second regular test day is November 15, according to the Enem frequently asked questions. Because rules and documents may be updated, candidates abroad should check the official Brazilian portal before the examination.

Booklets for dyslexia, autism and hearing disability

Inep’s announcement confirms a general booklet and versions with specific guidance for candidates with dyslexia, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and candidates who are deaf or hard of hearing. The supplied source extracts, however, do not expose individual links to those three versions. It would therefore be unsafe to claim that a particular address leads directly to every file.

Use the booklet announcement as confirmation and consult Inep’s official Enem documents area, which lists the general booklet and assessment manuals. If the relevant version is not visible, look for it through official Inep channels. No official translated version was identified, so an unofficial English explanation should not replace the Portuguese document intended for the candidate’s audience.

Final check before submission

First, confirm that every paragraph addresses the prompt’s complete scope. Next, count only the lines actually produced, remove identifying marks from the essay area and check that the handwriting is readable. Finally, inspect every reference: it must contribute to the argument rather than merely decorate the introduction. This sequence separates annulment risks from choices affecting quality and competency scores.
