Clubs level on points in the 2026/27 Europa League can provisionally share the same position. This happens when they are also level across the five criteria used from Matchday 1 through Matchday 7. In that case, alphabetical order merely organizes how their names are displayed. After Matchday 8, UEFA adds five criteria, and opponents’ performances can change the standings even after a team has completed its own match.

What each section of the table means
The league phase places 36 clubs in one table. Each participant plays eight matches against eight different opponents, as shown in UEFA’s official fixtures and results list.
At the end of the phase, clubs ranked first through eighth advance directly to the round of 16. Teams finishing from ninth through 24th enter the knockout phase play-offs. Those in positions 25 through 36 are eliminated.
A tiebreak can therefore do more than swap two lines in the table. It can separate direct entry to the round of 16 from a play-off place or determine whether a club remains in the competition.

The sequence used through Matchday 7
Between Matchdays 1 and 7, UEFA’s official tiebreaking explanation establishes this order for separating clubs level on points:
1. superior goal difference in the league phase;
2. higher number of goals scored;
3. higher number of away goals scored;
4. higher number of wins;
5. higher number of away wins.
The comparison stops at the first item that separates the teams. If two clubs have the same points but different goal differences, goals scored and the later criteria do not need to be considered.
If they remain exactly level across all five items, both are provisionally assigned the same position. Their names are displayed alphabetically according to UEFA’s abbreviated club names. That arrangement is not a sixth sporting criterion and does not mean the first name is genuinely ahead.
Why the order can change during a matchday
Points, goal difference, goals, wins and away figures change as matches are completed. A late goal can move several tied clubs even if it does not change the winner of the game in which it is scored.
Matchday 4 was spread across November 4 and 5, 2026. UEFA’s list records Rennes 0–0 Olympiacos on November 4, for example, while other matches were scheduled for November 5. An intermediate snapshot therefore has limited value: some teams may already have four matches recorded while others have not completed their fourth.
The official UEFA standings are the reference for checking the current order. Because the page is dynamic, it should be checked again after every match in the round has ended rather than treating an earlier snapshot as final.
The complete tiebreak after Matchday 8
Once all league-phase games are finished, the first five criteria continue to apply in the same sequence. If the tie remains, five more follow:
6. total points collectively obtained by the club’s eight opponents;
7. collective goal difference of those opponents;
8. total goals collectively scored by those opponents;
9. lower disciplinary-points total;
10. higher club coefficient.
For the disciplinary criterion, UEFA assigns three points for a red card, one for a yellow card and three for a dismissal caused by two yellow cards in the same match. As the lower total prevails, fewer disciplinary points provide the advantage.
Criteria 6 through 8 measure the collective performance of the opponents faced. They do not replace the club’s own goal difference, goals or wins: they are used only if the first five items fail to break the tie.
How a club can drop after its match
The 18 fixtures on the final matchday are scheduled for January 28, 2027, and are set to take place simultaneously, according to UEFA’s published calendar. Even so, matches do not necessarily end at the same second. Results involving opponents a club has already faced can alter the collective totals used in criteria 6, 7 and 8.
Imagine two clubs level on points, goal difference, goals, away goals, wins and away wins. One may temporarily appear higher because its eight opponents have accumulated more points. If the other club’s opponents score later, that collective total could change and reverse the order.
This does not remove points or alter a result already earned. It simply completes a tiebreak that depends on the league phase as a whole. Discipline and coefficient are considered only if the tie also survives the three opponent-based criteria.
A reliable way to read the standings
During the first seven matchdays, check the points and work through the five provisional criteria in the prescribed order. If all five are identical, read the position as shared and do not assign a sporting advantage to alphabetical display order.
After Matchday 8, wait for the round to finish and check the official table again. The most consequential boundaries are between eighth and ninth and between 24th and 25th: at those points, a tiebreak can directly change a team’s route through the competition.
The essential distinction is this: the intermediate table describes the situation at that moment. Only the standings after eight matches, with all ten criteria available when needed, determine each club’s destination.
