Seven newcomers, six matches: mapping the 2026/27 Europa League

The 2026/27 Europa League league phase begins with seven clubs reaching a milestone: Ararat-Armenia, Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Jagiellonia, Lillestrøm, Sunderland and Torreense now record their best UEFA Cup/Europa League campaigns in this edition. They enter the competition across six fixtures, not five, because only Lillestrøm and Torreense face each other.

Who are the seven new names?

The official list of the 36 participants and their access routes reveals three different paths among the newcomers.

Ararat-Armenia, Jagiellonia and Lillestrøm advanced through the Europa League qualifying play-offs. The Armenian club arrived as national champion; Jagiellonia after finishing third in Poland; and Lillestrøm as Norwegian Cup winner.

Bournemouth, Sunderland and Torreense secured direct places: the English sides finished sixth and seventh respectively in their domestic league, while the Portuguese club won the Portuguese Cup. Crystal Palace completes the group after winning the 2025/26 Conference League.

The range of routes is the most revealing detail. The group combines cup winners, league qualifiers, a national champion that navigated qualifying and the holder of another continental trophy.

The three debuts on 16 September

The schedule confirmed by UEFA opens on Wednesday 16 September 2026. Ararat-Armenia host Sparta Praha at 18:45 CET. At 21:00 CET, Jagiellonia visit Olympiacos and Sunderland host AZ Alkmaar.

The trio faces three distinct tests. Ararat-Armenia start at home against a club that has previously reached the competition’s quarter-finals. Jagiellonia travel to Olympiacos, a recurring participant with several round-of-16 appearances. Sunderland also begin at home, facing AZ, the 1980/81 UEFA Cup runners-up.

Four newcomers and three games on the 17th

On Thursday 17 September, the other four newcomers feature in three matches, all listed for 21:00 CET. Crystal Palace host Lech Poznań; Lillestrøm and Torreense play the only head-to-head meeting within this group; and Bournemouth visit Real Sociedad.

That produces the correct opening-round count: seven clubs spread across six fixtures. The match in Norway allows two newcomers to make their first league-phase appearance simultaneously, while Palace and Bournemouth face opponents with previous UEFA Cup/Europa League campaigns.

The opening round is not the end of the meetings between them. On Matchday 2, Torreense host Sunderland; later fixtures include Jagiellonia versus Ararat-Armenia, Lillestrøm versus Bournemouth and Sunderland versus Jagiellonia, among other useful comparisons within the group.

How the 36-club table works

There are no separate groups. All 36 participants appear in one table, although each club plays only eight matches — four at home and four away — against different opponents. The phase runs from 16 September 2026 to 28 January 2027, according to the official format and dates guide.

After eight matchdays, first through eighth qualify directly for the round of 16. Teams placed ninth to 24th enter the knockout phase play-offs. Positions 25 to 36 are eliminated, as set out in the official standings explainer.

To follow the newcomers clearly, record four figures after every matchday: points, goal difference, position and distance from eighth and 24th. Those two boundaries represent the race for direct qualification and the survival line respectively.

What to watch in the tiebreakers

Between Matchdays 1 and 7, clubs level on points are separated first by goal difference, goals scored, away goals, wins and away wins. If they remain level on all five counts, they share a ranking and are displayed alphabetically by abbreviated name.

The final table adds criteria connected to the collective results of each club’s opponents, followed by disciplinary points and club coefficient. A provisional position can therefore change even when two teams have equal points. Looking only at victories gives an incomplete reading.

A genuinely broader map

The seven newcomers connect Armenia, England, Norway, Poland and Portugal in one storyline. More important than treating them as a single bloc, however, is recognizing their differences: some qualified by winning trophies, others through domestic league positions, and three survived the qualifying rounds.
