Grêmio earned a Brazilian berth in the 2027 Libertadores by reaching the Copa do Brasil final, but that is not yet the same as unconditional entry into the continental competition. On November 8, 2026, the club stood 18th in the Brasileirão, with 37 points from 34 matches. If relegated, it could run into the continental requirement that participants belong to their country’s top division in the year of the tournament. One qualification is essential: the official 2027 Libertadores manual is not among the documents available for this review.

What Grêmio has already earned
The change to Brazil’s allocation system is official. The CBF announced that the Copa do Brasil would qualify both its winner and runner-up for the Libertadores, while the Brasileirão would provide five nominees, one fewer than before.
After eliminating Atlético-MG and reaching the final, Grêmio took one of the two Copa do Brasil places. The competition rules reproduced by ge assign the group stage to the champion and a preliminary round to the runner-up. Reaching the final therefore secured at least the place reserved for the losing finalist.
The precise entry stage still depends on the Copa do Brasil outcome and the reallocation provisions that apply when a finalist has qualified through another competition. That does not change the central fact: the domestic sporting berth has been earned.

Berth, nomination and admission are separate steps
The apparent contradiction between “qualified” and “may not play” disappears when the process is separated into three stages.
First, performance in the Copa do Brasil creates the sporting berth. The CBF then applies its regulations and nominates Brazil’s representatives, resolving any overlapping qualifications. Finally, CONMEBOL checks whether every nominated club satisfies the continental competition’s eligibility requirements.
A national association can therefore have grounds to nominate a club without removing the organizer’s later review. Saying only that Grêmio is “guaranteed” merges the first stage with the last. Saying the club “has no berth” would also be inaccurate: the Copa do Brasil achievement has already occurred.
Why relegation matters
The risk exists because the continental rule used in 2026 required participating clubs, as a general principle, to belong to their association’s top division in the year of the competition. Both ge and UOL connect that requirement to Grêmio’s situation.
At publication time, UOL listed the club 18th, with 37 points after 34 matches. That creates a concrete question: if Grêmio competes in Série B in 2027, it may fail to meet the criterion applied by CONMEBOL in the previous edition.
Remaining in Série A would remove this specific conflict. It would not determine whether Grêmio enters the group stage or a preliminary round, but it would eliminate the possible incompatibility between playing in the Libertadores and being outside Brazil’s top division.
What cannot yet be called definitive
The provision cited by the Brazilian press belongs to the previous cycle. The official 2027 Libertadores manual was not located among the sources reviewed for this article. The 2026 wording therefore cannot be presented as though it were already a published and confirmed 2027 clause.
UOL cites two precedents that help explain the regulatory shift but do not replace the forthcoming rules: Paraguay’s General Caballero lost a berth after relegation, while Argentina’s Patronato played in the 2023 Libertadores despite competing in the second tier. These cases show that the framework has changed; by themselves, they do not establish how Grêmio’s situation will be decided.
Any reallocation of a rejected berth also needs official confirmation. Reports say the place would return to the Brasileirão standings, but the applicable decision should be checked against the final regulations and notices issued by the responsible governing bodies.
What supporters should follow
There are two independent decisions. The final Brasileirão table will determine whether Grêmio remains in Série A in 2027. The continental regulations will establish the admission requirements for the next Libertadores.
This issue must also be kept separate from the entry stage. Winning or finishing second in the Copa do Brasil, as well as any overlapping qualification involving the other finalist, may affect access to the group stage or a preliminary round. It does not, by itself, settle continental eligibility if the club is in the second tier.
The most accurate answer today
Grêmio has qualified on sporting merit through the Copa do Brasil and earned one of Brazil’s berths for the 2027 Libertadores. Its admission should not, however, be described as unconditional while relegation remains possible and the 2027 continental manual has not been published or confirmed in the available sources.
In practical terms, the berth exists; actual participation still depends on the club’s status in Brazilian football and the rules CONMEBOL applies to the 2027 edition. Because entry conditions can change, confirmation should come from the official CBF and CONMEBOL channels.
