Anyone wondering whether Xbox’s “reset” ends Halo, cancels games, or immediately changes Halo Infinite will find a narrower answer: none of those developments was announced. Xbox confirmed layoffs, a corporate reorganization, and the transfer of the next Halo game’s development to a dedicated team within Activision. It also said that a small Halo Studios team will continue supporting the community and games already on the market. The statement does not provide a schedule, platforms, content plans, or the future intensity of that support.

What Xbox announced
In a message published on September 22, 2026, Matt Booty announced the elimination of 268 roles across Halo Studios, other first-party studios, and Xbox Game Studios’ management and central functions. According to the text, actions completed since July — including studio divestitures — represent roughly three quarters of a previously announced restructuring.
The Xbox Wire statement says the aim is to operate fewer business units, align groups that already work closely together, and focus publishing expertise. It is a corporate change with an explicit human cost. Without additional data, the number of eliminated positions should not be turned into an estimate of team sizes, production speed, or the number of surviving projects.

How Halo fits into the reorganization
The confirmed change for the franchise is straightforward: Activision will expand its remit to include World’s Edge and Rare and will develop the next Halo title. The work will be handled by a new, purpose-built team that is separate from ongoing development and plans for Call of Duty.
That does not mean Halo has become Call of Duty, or that the two series will necessarily share technology, schedules, or a business model. The source establishes only the new reporting structure and the separation between the teams. The announcement supplies no title, release window, platforms, or format for the next game.
What happens to Halo Studios and current games
The statement says a small team at Halo Studios will continue supporting the Halo community and games in market. It does not identify every product covered, compare the team’s size with the previous organization, or promise a particular update cadence. Describing this as “reduced support” would therefore go beyond what has been confirmed.
The Halo Studios institutional page still describes the Redmond-based studio as the home of the Halo universe and says it is working with Unreal Engine. It mentions multiple projects in development and presents Halo: Campaign Evolved as its next currently announced project: an expanded rebuild of the Halo: Combat Evolved campaign with three new missions, a broader selection of weapons and vehicles, new enemies, and additional gameplay-modifying Skulls.
There is an important distinction between the two pages: the institutional page describes projects and creative identity, while the later statement defines the corporate reorganization. Neither source explains how every previously mentioned project will be divided between Activision and the remaining Halo Studios team. Until an official update addresses that point, the allocation remains unknown.
Halo Infinite did not receive a shutdown announcement
The official Halo Infinite Xbox page continues to present an open-world campaign, free-to-play multiplayer, and Forge. It also lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10/11 as platforms and describes console-and-PC access through Xbox Play Anywhere.
The page is useful for checking the game’s published offering, but it is not a future roadmap following the reorganization. The September 22 statement does not announce server closures, removal from stores, canceled content, or platform changes. The absence of those announcements does not guarantee that everything will remain unchanged. Commercial terms, availability, and features may change, so check the official page before buying, downloading, or renewing a subscription.
What remains unanswered
The sources consulted do not confirm the name of Activision’s Halo project, its relationship to Campaign Evolved, a release date or window, platforms, price, distribution model, or the full composition of the new team. They also do not explain which projects will remain with Halo Studios or provide a detailed update plan for games currently in operation.
The safest reading separates three levels: the layoffs and reorganization are announced facts; Activision taking the next title and a small team maintaining support are declared plans; conclusions about cancellations, exclusivity, monetization, or content frequency remain speculation.
Where to follow verified information
For community news, fiction, contests, and franchise updates, Halo Waypoint remains the official editorial channel. When checked on September 22, the page featured posts about Halo Fest, Forge, the 25th anniversary, community stories, and The Master Chief Collection, but it did not yet explain the new division of responsibilities.
Corporate changes should be checked on Xbox Wire; project information on Halo Studios and Halo Waypoint; and Halo Infinite availability and terms on the product page. Keeping those roles separate helps prevent an older sales page from being treated as confirmation of future strategy or a community post from being interpreted as a corporate decision.
