Nikola Bartunkova defeated Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-3 on Sunday, October 4, 2026, in the third round of the China Open in Beijing. The 26th-seeded Czech advanced to the round of 16 after completing the victory in 1 hour and 35 minutes. Sabalenka exited the tournament, but she had already qualified for the WTA Finals—so the result does not eliminate her from the season-ending event.

Who won and what was the score?
Bartunkova won both sets without needing a tiebreak. According to the WTA’s official match report, she opened the match by breaking Sabalenka’s serve and protected that advantage despite facing five break points in the sixth game.
The Czech then held her next two service games at love to close out the opening set 6-4. In the second, she again earned the first break, moved ahead 3-1 and did not offer her opponent a single break opportunity. Another break in the ninth game completed the 6-3 set.
The match page labels the contest as the round of 32, within the tournament’s third round. That is because the China Open has a 96-player singles draw, with the 32 seeds receiving first-round byes.

The statistics behind the result
The clearest difference came on break points. Bartunkova converted three of eight opportunities, while Sabalenka failed to convert any of the five she created. All of the Belarusian’s chances came in the first set; Bartunkova did not face a break point in the second.
The official match statistics also show Bartunkova winning 75 of the 137 points played, or 54.7% of the total. She won 82.8% of points behind her first serve, compared with Sabalenka’s 53.1%. Both players hit four aces and made two double faults.
Those figures show that the outcome did not depend solely on a handful of decisive points. Bartunkova held the lead from the start, erased every opening for a comeback on her serve and was more efficient when break opportunities appeared.

Who is Nikola Bartunkova?
Bartunkova is a 20-year-old Czech player who arrived in Beijing at a career-high No. 34 in the world rankings. The victory over Sabalenka was her 22nd of the season and her 16th on hard courts, according to the WTA.
It was also Bartunkova’s second career victory over a Top 10 opponent. Her first came against then-No. 10 Belinda Bencic in the second round of the 2026 Australian Open. Her career record against members of that group improved to two wins and five losses.
The run also put the Czech in the round of 16 at a WTA 1000 event for the second time. She had reached the same stage in Rome, where she lost to eventual champion Elina Svitolina. Bartunkova’s official record also lists third-round appearances at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open in 2026.
Why is the victory an upset?
The rankings and seedings illustrate the scale of the surprise: Bartunkova was ranked No. 34 and seeded 26th, while Sabalenka was the world No. 2 and the tournament’s second seed. Before this loss, the Belarusian had won 22 of her 24 matches in 2026 against opponents ranked outside the Top 20.
There was, however, a recent precedent between them. Sabalenka beat Bartunkova in Berlin after losing the opening set. In Beijing, the Czech prevented another comeback. According to the WTA, this was Sabalenka’s sixth consecutive loss after dropping the first set.
The elimination also extended an unusual Beijing record for the world No. 2: she reached the quarterfinals in 2018, 2023 and 2024 but has yet to make a semifinal in five main-draw appearances.
Bartunkova’s next match
Bartunkova will face Austria’s Sinja Kraus for a place in the quarterfinals. Kraus advanced by defeating Dayana Yastremska 6-1, 6-4. The WTA lists one previous meeting between Bartunkova and Kraus, won by the Czech in Hechingen in 2025.
That is the confirmed matchup at publication time. Bartunkova’s eventual ranking position will depend on other results and on the points each player is defending; no ranking projection is therefore presented here as a confirmed outcome.
What the loss means for Sabalenka
The defeat ends only Sabalenka’s China Open campaign. It does not remove her from the 2026 WTA Finals. The WTA confirmed her qualification on September 28, before the match in Beijing.
It will be Sabalenka’s sixth consecutive appearance at the season-ending tournament. She was a finalist in 2022 and 2025 and became the second singles player to qualify for the 2026 edition, following Elena Rybakina.
The confirmed consequences are therefore separate: Bartunkova remains in the China Open and will play for a quarterfinal place; Sabalenka is out in Beijing but retains her already-secured WTA Finals berth.
