2026/27 Premier League

Premier League: tiebreakers and fixtures after Matchweek 8

A guide to points, goal difference and the official schedule from 31 October to 2 November, without treating unverified positions as current.

The Premier League table is ordered first by points and, when teams are level, by goal difference. Goals scored and two head-to-head criteria follow. The official schedule consulted for the next matchweek contains ten fixtures between 31 October and 2 November, including Chelsea v Manchester United and Liverpool v Arsenal.

There is an important limitation: the 2026/27 table page cited in the brief was not among the sources actually read for this article. It is therefore not possible to publish positions, points, matches played or goal differences as of 25 October with confidence. Those figures should be checked on the official Premier League table, which can change after every match.

What the columns mean

The league has 20 clubs playing one another home and away, for a total of 380 matches. Under the official explanation of the format, a win earns three points, a draw one and a defeat none.

In the table, “GF” — or “F”, depending on the display — means goals scored. “GA” or “A” records goals conceded. Goal difference, shown as “GD”, is the difference between the two. A team with 15 goals for and ten against, for example, has a +5 goal difference. This is only an illustration, not a figure from the season.

The matches-played column also matters. Two teams may have the same points while one has played more often. Reading position without checking matches and goal difference can give a misleading impression of each club’s situation.

The tiebreaking sequence

When two or more teams finish level on points, goal difference is the first tiebreaker. If they remain level, the higher number of goals scored takes precedence.

If points, goal difference and goals scored are all equal, the Premier League considers points won in the head-to-head matches between the tied clubs. The next step is away goals scored in those meetings. This sequence explains why teams with identical point totals may be listed in a different order.

A position displayed during the campaign is provisional. The head-to-head criteria acquire context as the relevant fixtures are played, so an interim ordering should not be treated as a final classification.

Table zones require context

At the top, the current sporting contest should be separated from the final allocation of European places. The league’s own explanation says that allocation can depend on the collective performance of English clubs and on domestic cup winners. The 2025/26 arrangement should therefore not be applied automatically to 2026/27.

At the bottom, the structural rule is clearer: the bottom three at the end of the season are relegated to the Championship. In October, however, much of the 380-match programme remains. Small gaps in points or goal difference can change in one matchweek, but no individual fixture guarantees a lasting position.

Next matchweek: dates and GMT kick-offs

The Premier League’s revised schedule lists eight matches on Saturday 31 October: Chelsea v Manchester United at 12:30; Bournemouth v Leeds United, Brentford v Nottingham Forest, Coventry City v Sunderland, Hull City v Ipswich Town and Manchester City v Brighton at 15:00; Tottenham Hotspur v Crystal Palace at 17:30; and Aston Villa v Fulham at 20:00.

Liverpool v Arsenal is scheduled for 16:30 on Sunday 1 November. Newcastle United v Everton completes the matchweek at 20:00 on Monday 2 November. All those times are GMT, as stated by the official source.

The page gives UK broadcasters only for selected fixtures. That does not establish availability in other countries. Dates, times and broadcasts can change, so check the official link before making plans.

Fixtures worth comparing against the table

Chelsea v Manchester United and Liverpool v Arsenal pair clubs identified by the Premier League as ever-present since 1992. Tottenham v Crystal Palace, Aston Villa v Fulham and Newcastle v Everton also provide direct comparisons between opponents, but their precise impact depends on the points and matches played when each game begins.

A useful way to follow the matchweek is to record each team’s previous points total, check games played and recalculate goal difference after the results. Positions should be compared only then. A draw adds one point to each side; a win adds three to the winner, while the goals change GF, GA and GD.

Full calendar and possible changes

The full 380-match calendar is a reference for the entire campaign, but the Premier League states that fixtures are subject to change. For the immediate matchweek, its amendments page is the more specific reference among the sources consulted.

That approach also addresses apparent differences between calendar versions: use the latest revised notice and check again closer to the date. The official table remains the proper source for current positions and statistics, which should not be reconstructed from the fixture list.
