Arsenal vs Fleetwood: who O’Neill, Salmon and Dowman are

The rotated lineup includes one senior Arsenal debutant, a defender used in two competitions and an early Premier League debutant.

Ceadach O’Neill is the young player making his Arsenal senior debut against Fleetwood. Marli Salmon had already represented the first team in the Champions League and FA Cup, while Max Dowman entered the fixture with Premier League experience. All three start, but they are at different points in their careers.

That distinction matters because a lineup filled with teenagers does not mean that every one of them is debuting. In its official team announcement, Arsenal identifies only Illan Meslier and O’Neill as club debutants. Salmon and Dowman are confirmed in the XI, but the announcement does not describe the match as either player’s first start.

Why the lineup attracted attention

Mikel Arteta made nine changes for the trip to Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup fourth round. O’Neill and Dowman operate on opposite wings, while Salmon joins Jurrien Timber, Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié in the back line. Meslier starts in goal.

The lineup combines academy players with experienced names including Martin Zubimendi, Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres. The young players therefore receive their opportunity within a side that is not made up entirely of academy prospects.

Three terms should be kept separate when assessing their milestones. A senior debut is a player’s first official appearance for the first team. Starting means being in the XI from kickoff. Previous professional experience shows that a player has appeared before, but does not, by itself, establish that he has started an earlier match.

Ceadach O’Neill makes his Arsenal debut

O’Neill is 18 in the lineup announcement and makes his first Arsenal senior appearance. He plays on the wing opposite Dowman and is described by the club as a winger. This is his Arsenal debut, but not his first experience in senior football: he had already represented Northern Ireland’s senior national team.

Arsenal’s academy profile says that O’Neill was born on April 10, 2008, and joined the club in July 2024. He scored 18 goals in 30 academy matches during the 2025/26 season. He subsequently scored in a behind-closed-doors friendly and joined the first-team training camp in Girona.

Those figures help explain his promotion without turning youth-level production into a prediction of immediate success. The confirmed milestone against Fleetwood is straightforward: O’Neill moves from academy football into his first Arsenal senior match.

Marli Salmon already had professional experience

Salmon is not making his debut against Fleetwood. The defender had played official first-team matches before this fixture. An academy player since the age of nine, he can operate at center back or fullback, according to Arsenal’s account of his development.

His professional debut came in December 2025, at 16 years and 102 days, when he replaced Ben White in a 3-0 win over Club Brugge. That appearance made him Arsenal’s fourth-youngest player in European competition. He later featured in FA Cup matches against Portsmouth and Wigan Athletic, with the latter also marking his home debut.

Before facing Fleetwood, Salmon had therefore appeared for the first team in two competitions: the Champions League and FA Cup. The Carabao Cup fixture adds a third competition to the record described by the sources. The team announcement places him in defense but does not establish whether this is his first professional start.

Max Dowman had already debuted in the Premier League

Dowman is not a debutant either. He made his first professional appearance in August 2025, replacing Noni Madueke in the 64th minute of a 5-0 win over Leeds United. At 15 years and 235 days, he became the second-youngest player in Premier League history.

Arsenal’s official review of its youngest players places only Ethan Nwaneri ahead of him. Nwaneri debuted at 15 years and 181 days. According to the club, they are the only two players to represent Arsenal before turning 16.

Dowman starts on one side of the attack against Fleetwood. The team announcement also notes that he was named player of the previous round after his performance against Ipswich Town. That confirms earlier Carabao Cup and senior-team experience, but the supplied sources do not support calling this “another start” or identifying it as his first appearance in the XI.

Each young player’s milestone, clearly stated

The accurate reading of the lineup is this: O’Neill makes his Arsenal debut; Salmon starts after previous Champions League and FA Cup appearances; Dowman starts after earlier appearances in the Premier League and Carabao Cup.

O’Neill owns the clearest new milestone, moving from academy football to his first senior Arsenal appearance. For Salmon, the game expands his first-team experience to three competitions. For Dowman, it is another appearance in a professional career that began unusually early — while the available official material does not establish how many previous starts he had made.
