The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping: two essential movies

The Hunger Games and Catching Fire provide a short Haymitch refresher before the new feature film.

If you only have one night, rewatch The Hunger Games and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Together, they offer the shortest route to remembering the Haymitch known by Katniss and understanding what a special edition of the Games means. You do not need to watch the entire collection before *The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping*.

The new story returns to Haymitch Abernathy’s youth, 24 years before the events of *The Hunger Games*. It begins with the reaping for the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell. This guide prepares you for that return without revealing events from the book or new movie.

Why these two movies are enough

The selection works because each title performs a different job. *The Hunger Games* restores the context of Panem, the reaping, the Games as spectacle, and especially adult Haymitch’s relationship with Katniss. *The Hunger Games: Catching Fire* expands the reference point for special editions of the competition, making it easier to understand why the 50th Games hold a distinctive place in the story.

This is an editorial recommendation, not a mandatory watch order. Its purpose is to establish the distance between the young man placed at the center of the Second Quarter Quell and the person Katniss meets years later.

In an interview published by Scholastic, Suzanne Collins explained that writing from young Haymitch’s perspective gave her room to explore his earlier journey. She also connected him to Katniss, whom he would come to treat as a surrogate daughter during the war. That continuity makes the first movie especially useful for this refresher.

First: The Hunger Games

Start with *The Hunger Games*. Instead of looking for a detailed account of Haymitch’s past, focus on the man introduced by Katniss’s story. The new production returns to an earlier stage, so remembering where the character ends up matters more than memorizing names, districts, or individual stages of the competition.

Collins describes young Haymitch as having a greater capacity for hope, love, and joy, as well as a more colorful and humorous voice. The contrast with his later self is an essential part of the preparation, even though viewers do not yet need to know how that change occurred.

The movie also provides enough of Panem’s general structure and the Games to reestablish the setting. That foundation works for people who watched the franchise years ago and for those seeking only the necessary context before the new chapter.

Next: The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Watch *The Hunger Games: Catching Fire* next. Within this short route, it serves as the bridge to the idea of a Quarter Quell: a special edition of the Games, rather than merely another number in the annual sequence.

The official information released by Scholastic says *The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping* begins on the morning of the 50th Hunger Games. As the Second Quarter Quell, this edition requires twice as many tributes to be taken from their homes. Haymitch leaves District 12 with three other selected tributes.

It is best to stop there. The Collins interview page itself warns that it contains spoilers for the novel. The chronology, protagonist, and special rule of the 50th Games already provide enough context for a movie refresher.

Where The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping fits

*The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping* does not continue Katniss’s final chapter. It takes place 24 years before *The Hunger Games* and follows Haymitch during the Second Quarter Quell.

The adaptation will be the franchise’s sixth feature film. According to the official film information compiled by Scholastic, Lionsgate has scheduled its release for November 20, 2026.

Francis Lawrence directs after helming every installment since *The Hunger Games: Catching Fire*. Billy Ray adapted the screenplay from Collins’s novel. That creative continuity adds to the value of *Catching Fire* in the short route, without meaning the new production will repeat its structure.

The complete marathon is optional

Anyone wanting a broader refresher can follow the five earlier films in release order: *The Hunger Games*, *The Hunger Games: Catching Fire*, *The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1*, *The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2*, and *The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes*.

The first four cover Katniss’s era; the fifth returns to an earlier period in Panem. This marathon adds context about other generations and the franchise’s wider trajectory, but it is not a prerequisite for understanding young Haymitch’s premise.

Scholastic identifies *Sunrise on the Reaping* as the fifth novel in the series and its adaptation as the sixth feature. For the United States, JustWatch maintains a current availability lookup, checked on November 1, 2026. Catalogs, formats, and terms can change, so check the listing again before deciding where to watch.

The choice for one or two viewing slots

With two viewing slots, watch *The Hunger Games* first and *The Hunger Games: Catching Fire* second. The sequence presents adult Haymitch before refreshing the concept of a special edition of the Games.

If you only have time for one movie, *The Hunger Games: Catching Fire* is the title most directly connected to the Quarter Quell. The complete collection remains an optional way to go deeper, not homework required before *The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping*.
