A guide to Grammy terminology

K-pop at the Grammys: entry, ballot, nomination and win

The four stages prove different levels of progress in the Recording Academy process; consideration is not a nomination.

If a K-pop release was “submitted for Grammy consideration” or appeared on the Grammy’s first-round ballot, it is not yet nominated. Submission merely places a recording in the process; the ballot shows that an eligible entry reached first-round voting; nomination exists only after that round is tabulated; and a win depends on final voting. That is the short answer for reading label, artist and fan announcements without getting ahead of the result.

“Submitted for Grammy consideration” means entered

The phrase says that a recording, album or music video/film was entered with the Recording Academy. According to the official Grammy FAQ, Professional and Voting Members, along with registered media companies, may submit recordings. Members may enter their own eligible work or that of their peers.

This does not represent a judgment of merit, institutional endorsement or nomination. It is the formal entry point. For the 69th awards, entries ran from July 7 through Aug. 21, 2026, while the product eligibility period ran from Aug. 31, 2025, through Aug. 28, 2026. The FAQ also sets distribution, metadata and identification requirements, among other criteria.

A “For Your Consideration” campaign can therefore describe a real entry, but it does not prove advancement. In K-pop coverage, the accurate wording is “was entered” or “was submitted for consideration,” together with the category identified by the source.

Screening checks eligibility and category placement

After submission, the Awards department reviews every entry. The Recording Academy’s description of the voting process says screening sessions check whether material meets the qualifications and is placed in the appropriate Field and category. This stage does not make artistic or technical judgments.

The editorial consequence matters: clearing screening is not a Grammy recommendation. It means the entry met the applicable conditions and was routed appropriately. An entry may also fail to reach the ballot if it is found ineligible.

“On the ballot” still does not mean nominated

Entries that meet the requirements appear on the first ballot sent to Voting Members. During that round, voters choose the works they believe should receive nominations. Consequently, “on the ballot,” “on the first-round ballot” and “eligible for voting” describe presence in the stage before the nominees list.

The FAQ states the distinction directly: an entry is submitted material; a nomination is the later result of voting. For the 69th awards, first-round voting runs from Oct. 12 to Oct. 22, 2026, and nominees will be announced on Nov. 16, 2026. On Oct. 18, therefore, a post about ballot placement cannot be turned into a nomination announcement.

It is also important to check who is recognized. The FAQ distinguishes Record Of The Year, which recognizes the performance and specified recording contributions, from Song Of The Year, which recognizes songwriters. The name of a performer associated with a release does not by itself establish who would receive credit in a category.

“Grammy-nominated” requires the official list

An artist or professional should be called a nominee only after the Recording Academy announces the nominations. The first round determines that list; nominations in certain Craft Categories are decided by specialized committees made up of active Voting Members.

To verify a claim, find the category name, work title and credited professional in an official announcement or record. Ballot screenshots, campaign graphics and “consideration” messages are not substitutes for confirmation. The official awards page maintains an archive of ceremonies and results, which helps separate historical recognition from a current-season entry.

“Grammy winner” comes only after final voting

A separate vote follows the nomination announcement. Members choose winners from among the nominees, and Deloitte & Touche LLP tabulates the ballots. Under the published process, the recording with the most votes in a category wins; ties are possible. Results are announced during the Premiere and televised ceremonies.

For the 69th awards, final voting is scheduled for Dec. 10, 2026, through Jan. 7, 2027, with the ceremony scheduled for Feb. 7, 2027. Because dates and rules can change, check the official FAQ before publishing service information.

“Grammy nominee” and “Grammy winner” are not interchangeable either: all nominees receive a Nominee Medallion and Nomination Certificate, while winners receive an award, subject to the stated terms for receiving the statuette.

A quick test for K-pop headlines

Before sharing a claim, identify its verb and evidence. “Submitted” proves entry; “accepted” or “eligible” may indicate that screening was cleared; “on the ballot” proves presence in the first vote; “nominated” requires an official announcement; and “winner” requires the final result. If the original post says only “for consideration,” preserve that stage instead of promoting it to the next one.

The same standard applies to every artist, whether or not they perform K-pop. Geographic origin and the strength of a campaign do not change the formal path: submission, screening, first-round voting, nomination, final voting and result. That sequence—not the enthusiasm of a post—defines what can be reported.
