MLS 2026: conferences, playoff places and standings

Understand direct qualification, the Wild Card and the limits of the available official data before comparing clubs.

The 2026 MLS standings must be read separately by conference. The top seven teams in both the Eastern and Western Conferences advance directly to the first round of the playoffs; eighth and ninth enter the Wild Card. To see which clubs occupy those places now, use the official conference standings, as the page updates after each match and distinguishes official standings from its live version.

Two conferences, 30 clubs

MLS has 30 clubs in its 31st season, split evenly between the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 regular-season matches: 17 at home and 17 away. Clubs face every opponent in their own conference twice, accounting for 28 games, and play six matches against teams from the other conference.

That structure is why the complete club list should not be treated as one unified table. The relevant race takes place within each conference, even when supporters compare point totals across East and West.

Points and the qualification zone

The competition guidelines award three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. Points are therefore the first measure used to order and compare records.

Places 1 through 7 in each conference qualify automatically for the Round One Best-of-3 Series. The eighth- and ninth-placed clubs contest a single-elimination Wild Card match, whose winner completes the first-round field. There are consequently two important lines in the standings: between seventh and eighth, and between ninth and tenth.

What the available page currently confirms

The official material read on October 18, 2026 says Chicago Fire FC have clinched a place in the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs. The same page says Minnesota United revived their playoff hopes. Those descriptions represent different situations: clinching does not establish a final seed, while revived hopes do not prove qualification.

The supplied standings extract contains no rows showing positions, matches, points or goal differences for the 30 clubs. It is therefore not possible to reproduce a complete current table here or state which teams occupy every direct and Wild Card place at this moment.

Ties require the complete official sequence

When two or more clubs have equal points, it is unsafe to select goal difference, wins or head-to-head results in isolation. The criteria must be applied in the order published by the league.

The section of the guidelines available for this article does not include that sequence. To avoid assigning an unverified or outdated rule to the 2026 season, this guide neither invents criteria nor carries them over from another year. Before resolving a tie, check the relevant section of the official competition guidelines; wording and conditions may change. If the complete list is not visible, the safe conclusion is to leave the clubs tied until the full regulations can be checked.

Regular-season table versus playoff bracket

The standings measure regular-season performance and determine which clubs enter each qualification band. The playoffs then use their own format: a single Wild Card match and a best-of-three first round under the 2026 guidelines. A table position, a clinched berth and progress through the knockout competition are therefore separate facts.

A future opponent should not be inferred from a provisional position either. Use the official schedule for confirmed fixtures and results. The material read does not provide a verifiable schedule for the coming days, so no upcoming match is promised here.

A reliable checking routine

First select East or West. Compare the points, then identify the lines around seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth. If teams are level, open the guidelines and apply the entire official sequence without skipping steps. Finally, distinguish the “Live” table, which changes during matches, from the “Official” table, updated at the conclusion of each game.

News provides context but does not replace the standings. The official news page records clinched berths and shifts in momentum, while positions and point totals should be confirmed on the dedicated standings page.
