The 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad on November 5, 2026 took Olympique Lyonnais to seven points after four Europa League league-phase matches. The result did not qualify OL: four rounds remain, and the position displayed during this matchday is provisional until the other games have finished.

How the draw unfolded at Anoeta
Real Sociedad opened the scoring through Oskarsson in the 28th minute. Lyon responded after halftime, with Corentin Tolisso equalizing in the 54th minute from a Tessmann cross. According to Africa Foot United’s match report, goalkeepers Greif and Marrero also made important saves before the game ended 1-1.
For OL, the point followed a 3-0 defeat to Hoffenheim. The team had previously beaten Anderlecht 2-1 and Crystal Palace 3-2. Those results, plus the draw in Spain, account for the French club’s seven points.

Seven points do not mean qualification
The league phase places 36 clubs in one table. Under the rules published by UEFA, the top eight after eight matchdays advance directly to the round of 16. Teams finishing ninth through 24th enter the knockout phase playoffs, while those in 25th through 36th are eliminated.
The draw therefore keeps Lyon in contention but does not determine its route. The club can still pursue direct qualification, finish in the playoff band or fall outside the top 24, depending on the final four rounds.

Why the matchday position is provisional
OL’s exact place should not be presented as final while other fourth-round matches are still being completed. Points collected by rivals can change the order without Lyon playing again.
Tied teams are also separated during the first seven matchdays initially by goal difference, goals scored, away goals, wins and away wins. The table can consequently change through both results and tiebreakers.

Lyon’s four remaining fixtures
The official UEFA schedule lists two home games before the January break: Lillestrøm on November 26 and Union SG on December 10. OL then visits Jagiellonia on January 21, 2027 and hosts Leverkusen on January 28.
That run distributes the remaining points across two home fixtures, a trip to Poland and a final match back in Lyon. Dates and other arrangements may change, so the official schedule should be checked before each game.
What the result leaves for both clubs
For Lyon, the concrete consequence is straightforward: seven points, no secured berth and half of the campaign still to play. The competitive priority is to move into or remain in the top eight; if that does not happen, a finish between ninth and 24th still provides a path through the playoffs.
Real Sociedad also added one point to its campaign. Its earlier schedule showed a loss to Bournemouth, a draw with Union SG and a 6-0 victory over Lillestrøm. The Spanish club’s official fixture page confirms that the meeting with OL was its fourth league-phase match.
The sound conclusion is therefore not that qualification has been achieved, but that the contest remains open: the draw preserves Lyon’s possibilities without reducing the importance of the final four fixtures.
