Provisional standings

Premier League: United ranked 19th on goal difference

The game in hand explained the uneven schedule, but not the incorrect order shown by one table.

Manchester United were 19th, not bottom, in the snapshot before their outstanding match against Aston Villa on November 8, 2026. United and Crystal Palace both had seven points, but the Manchester club’s -5 goal difference was better than Palace’s -14. Under the first official tiebreaker, Palace belonged in 20th.

The game in hand showed that United still had an immediate opportunity to earn points. It did not provide advance credit or change the order of the standings criteria.

The snapshot before the outstanding match

At 11:25 a.m. EST on November 8, 2026, Standings Today recorded United after nine matches: one win, four draws and four losses. They had scored ten goals, conceded 15, posted a -5 difference and earned seven points.

Aston Villa had also played nine games, collecting 12 points with a -3 difference. The match between the clubs was still listed as upcoming. Most other teams had already completed ten matches.

That difference does not invalidate the table: each club is positioned according to the points actually earned by the cutoff. It simply makes the games-played column essential.

Why United should not have appeared bottom

Standings Today displayed United in 20th and Crystal Palace in 19th, although the page’s own figures gave both clubs seven points and goal differences of -5 and -14 respectively. That order was incompatible with the competition’s published tiebreak procedure.

NBC Sports reported the same points and goal differences but placed Manchester United 19th and Crystal Palace 20th. Its page carried an 11:05 a.m. publication timestamp on November 8 without identifying a time zone in the material reviewed. It is therefore not possible to calculate a reliable interval between that timestamp and Standings Today’s EST cutoff. What the figures do establish, regardless of timing, is that goal difference favored United.

A game in hand provides no automatic points

The Premier League’s official guide awards three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a loss. Each of the 20 clubs plays 38 matches, meeting every opponent at home and away.

United had seven points before hosting Villa. A win would take them to ten, a draw to eight and a defeat would leave them on seven. These are arithmetic scenarios, not a score prediction.

Ten points would move United above Sunderland, Coventry City and Nottingham Forest on points in that snapshot. Eight would also put them above Palace’s seven. The exact position would still depend on the applicable goal difference after the match.

Points per game provide context only

United were averaging about 0.78 points per match, compared with Palace’s 0.70. The rate can help compare teams that have played different numbers of games, but it does not determine the official table. Projected final totals do not replace points already earned either.

Having a “game in hand” means having a fixture still to play, not points waiting to be awarded. The table incorporates them only after a result is confirmed.

The official tiebreak order

When clubs are level on points, the Premier League first uses goal difference and then goals scored. If they remain tied, head-to-head record and finally away goals scored in those head-to-head meetings apply, according to the official guide.

The first criterion already settled this comparison: United’s -5 ranked above Palace’s -14.

The relegation zone was provisional

Arsenal led with 27 points from ten games, followed by Brighton & Hove Albion on 22 and Manchester City on 21. At the other end, Sunderland had eight points; Manchester United and Crystal Palace had seven. Once the tiebreakers were applied, the relegation places were Sunderland, United and Palace, from 18th through 20th.

Relegation is decided only after all 38 matches. This is a snapshot from before Manchester United vs Aston Villa, not the result of that fixture or the season’s final table. Because standings change after matches, readers should check the official Premier League table for the latest position.
